Depends on what kind of "network" The collision answer is correct only for ethernet. For Token ring, older "Apple Talk", that did not happen, the NIC would listen for a "spare packet" and fill it, never getting a collision.
Also, for ethernet, if running on a full duplex switch, there are no colissions, because the transmit and receive use different pairs. In that case, the switch does the store and forward - in effect buffering any "collisions", making them non-existent.
So, the answer requires more detail as to what "NIC" we are talking about. With what you supplied, there is no correct answer....just guesses. Most people guess ethernet, and the "old" style of ethernet, which did have collision detection to determine if it was clear to transmit. That type of ethernet is not common any more.
