A good practice amp is one of these essential, must have things for the serious bass or electric guitar player. Do you intend to become one? Well, then you have got to work on your playing on a regular basis!
Far from being just another soon to be forgotten gadget or some flavor of the day tool, practice amps is essential if you want to be able to perform to the best of your ability.
Sure, you can always play your guitar or bass dry, using no amplification or effects what so ever. However, this is usually very unsatisfactory and not very inspirational in the long run. And let us be fair - inspiration is a great help when it comes to practicing regularly and willingly on your instrument of choice.
Here are 10 things you may want to reflect upon if you want to get the best out of your instrument practice amplifier.
1. What will your primary use be?
If you intend to use your amp solely for keeping your chops and learning new techniques in the comfort of your own home, then you may in fact do without a proper amp with a speaker. Many of the smaller multi-effects units today has good preamplifiers and headphone connections built right in. And what is more, many of these units sound surprisingly good.
You may also have your bases covered with one of the tiny bedroom amps that run on batteries.
However, if you intend to use your practice amp to play along with other people, then you will need a regular small to mid sized amp. Want to play with a drummer? If so, then you will definitely need something with more power than your usual home practice amplifiers.
2. Portability
It goes without saying that size and weight is something to take into consideration as far as portability and usability goes. Size also matters in some settings.
The bigger amps (and tube amps in particular) undoubtedly tend to sound better and fuller in band and rehearsal settings. That said, a bigger amp will usually cost more, be harder to move around or fit into a regular room at home.
Also, let us forget that you will need some seriously long extension cables if you want to bring your practice amp outdoors... unless of course you happen to have one of these really portable, battery driven micro amps.
3. Tube be, or not tube be...
You will often hear the really dedicated players, guitar players in particular, ramble on about the tone and vibe of real tube amps. And make no mistake about it - there is still nothing quite like a good tube amp when it comes to deliver a great basic amplifier tone.
However, you will also be forced to take into consideration things like higher cost, increased weight, greater heat and fragility, as well as increased service costs of tube amps.
To me, the biggest disadvantage with tubes (also called valves) in instrument amplifiers, used primarily for practicing at lower volume is this:
A. They tend to be more of "one trick ponies" - although really great at what they do.
B. Many tube amps tend to sound good only when you get a certain volume going, and when you turn down to that neighbor approved bedroom volume - well, you might just as well use a cheaper digital amp.
In all fairness, it should be noted that you can get really small, pure tube amps for home practice or recording use. Not exactly cheap, but with some killer tones on board!
4. Your arsenal of sounds
Today, most players like to add a number of digital or analog effects to their playing. If you have a pure tube amp as your practice tool, then you will likely need a number of effects to be able to name your set up the best practice amp.
On the other hand, most digital practice amps these days comes with a huge number of great sounding effects already added. Not only that, the digital modeling amps can also mimic a number of those vastly more expensive tube/valve amplifiers.
Through a pair of headphones or at low volume, you would be hard pressed to differentiate between some of these modeling amps and the tube amps they are emulating.
5. The modern practise tools
More and more brands, like for instance large companies like Roland and Fender, keep coming up with some great tools for practicing at home and while on the road.
Many of these dedicated tools for improving your playing has phrase trainers, the ability to sync with computers and recording software, built in effects and looping abilities, on-board recording abilities and much more.

Electric Guitar Amps
Electric guitar amps come in such an array of power, special abilities, and specific purposes that it would be easy to become overwhelmed by it all. This article will present basic information about electric guitar amps.
In the simplest of guitar amps there is at least a volume control and most even have a gain and a master volume control. The gain control is equivalent to the distortion control on a distortion pedal. The tone controls typically include passive bass and treble controls or maybe even midrange control.
Generally speaking, there are two basic kinds of amps: 1) solid state and 2) vacuum tube. A solid state amplifier is easy to repair, lighter, and less expensive. The sounds produced by the solid state amp are those favored by Blues and Rock artists. A vacuum tube amplifier on the other hand, is more expensive, heavier, and periodically the tubes need to be replaced, adding to the expense of upkeep. The “slapback”, a term used to describe the echo effect, was originally produced through a tube amplifier.
Electric guitar amps come in two forms: 1) the combo contains the amplifier head and the guitar speakers in a single unit with the amp head including the preamp, built-in effects processing and a power amplifier; 2) the amp stack is an assembly of separate units, the amplifier head which is usually placed on top of one or more loudspeakers, and a separate amplifier head is placed on top of a guitar speaker cabinet. There different forms of the amp stack including the half stack (one cabinet with an amp head on top); full stack (the amp head on top of two cabinets); and Head and Cab, or Piggyback, (stacks on a frame that can be maneuvered with tilting hinges and casters).
Electric guitarists use the amps in one of two different situations, either for practice and performance, or for recording. Recording guitar amps have a power rating of 20 watts down, sometimes as low as even a fraction of 1 watt. Practice or performance amps, on the other hand, have a wattage of more than 50.
What is an electric guitar without distortion? Distortion is one of the major characteristics that define the electric guitar sound. Often referred to as the sound’s texture, distortion is shaped by the sound produced by the guitar amplifier by adding distortion and/or equalization effect pedals before the amp’s input jack.
Another kind of signature sounds of the electric guitar tone are the electronic effects.
Guitar effects are electronic devices that modify or the tone, pitch, or sound of an electric guitar by rerouting the electric signal in some way. The effects are housed in small effects pedals known as “stomp boxes” or directly in the guitar amps.

What amp or amps should I use for two Comp VR's?
I have two 12" Kicker Comp VR's and was thinking maybe a Kicker ZX7501 ZX Mono Block. I don't know to much about car stereo so any help or suggestions would be appreciated. If you have the Comp VR's, what are you running? Thanks.
I have used that amp before and know that it is a very nice amp but the only thing is that it is not 1 ohm stable. i know people who have run it at 1 ohm fine and it sounds great but kicker does not say for sure that it is stable at 1 ohm. you could try to look for a 2 channel amp that is 800 watts rms bridged @ 4 ohms. good luck!!
