Changing the oil in your motor vehicle is one of the most basic maintenance steps in responsible vehicle ownership. Unfortunately, it is also the one that auto and lube shops most commonly overcharge for. An oil change can be accomplished in less than an hour, and with very little physical work. All it takes is a few basic tools, a little bit of research, and some patience!
Before you begin, it is important to make sure you have the tools and parts you will need to complete the job properly. For most vehicles, all you will need to complete an oil change at home is:
- A socket or open-ended wrench
- A catch-can to hold the old oil
- A funnel
- At least one clean rag
- One new oil filter for your vehicle
- New oil to fill your vehicle with
You may have to purchase some or all of these tools. Everything on this list can be purchased at most of the major-name department stores. Funnels, automotive rags, and catch-cans should be available for a dollar or two. To ensure you select the correct type and amount of oil, as well as the correct oil filter for your vehicle, refer to the owners manual.
Getting the Job Done
An oil change can be accomplished in most passenger vehicles in five easy steps. This is assuming the job is done on a level garage floor, and that the vehicle sits high enough for you to reach the oil drain plug and oil filter without lifting the car. If there is not enough space, you will have to raise the car with a jack and place it on jack stands before beginning.
1) The first thing you need to do is remove the old oil from the vehicle. This is best done with the engine warm, but not hot. If your vehicle is cold, start it up and let it idle for a minute or two before beginning. You can still proceed if you have just driven your vehicle recently, but be aware that the draining oil will be very hot.
To locate the oil drain plug, refer to your owners manual. Slide your oil catch can down under the vehicle, positioned under the oil drain plug. Using a socket or open-end wrench, remove the oil drain plug. You will want to make sure your hand and arm are not in front of the plug as it is removed, or it will be covered with the draining oil!
You may have to let your vehicle sit and drain for 5-10 minutes.
2) Now, you need to remove the old oil filter. Locate the filter, and position the catch-can underneath it. You can remove the filter by twisting it off with your hand, or you can use a special oil filter wrench available at auto parts stores. Some people also elect to use a strap-wrench.
As the filter comes off the vehicle, an additional 1/2 quart of oil or so will drain. There is a rubber gasket at the top of the filter that should come off attached to the old filter. If it does not, you will need to pull it off of the engine yourself.
3) Replace the old oil filter with your new one. Before placing the new filter on the car, you will need to prepare it by filling it with some of the new oil. The amount your filter will hold depends entirely on its size and type. You will also want to take a small amount of new oil on your finger and rub it along the rubber gasket on the new filter. This will ensure proper fitment and a good seal.
When placing the new filter on the vehicle, it is best to tighten it on by hand. It is very easy to over-tighten the filter with a wrench, causing leaks. Get the filter on to that it fits snugly against the engine.
4) Fill the engine with new oil! Of course, before you start filling, you should re-attach the drain plug on the bottom! While filling, be careful not to pour too quickly and cause your funnel to overrun. Oil spilled over the engine can take a LONG time to burn off, and will cause smoke and bad smells.
Ensure you add the proper amount of oil using the dipstick. It is very important to wipe the dipstick with your clean rag each time you remove it to prevent contaminants from getting into the engine.
5) Clean up! All of that old oil that drained out of your vehicle is hazardous to the environment, and needs to be disposed of properly. You can use your funnel to transfer the oil from your catch-can to the empty container(s) your new oil came in.
IMPORTANT: Do NOT toss your old oil out in the trash! You can dispose of it safely by dropping it off at any quick-lube shop and most mechanic shops. They will dispose of it properly and safely for free, and will thank you for helping out the environment!
Now that you're done, you can stand back, admire your work, and think of ways to spend that $40 - $70 you just saved by avoiding the shops and doing the work at home!

How To Install A Aftermarket Radio In BMW E87
TOOLS NEEDED:
10 & 13mm sockets
Ratchet Wrench
Flat Head Screwdriver
Phillips Head Screwdriver
Electrical Tape
Coat Hanger or similar object
Electric Drill
1/8" Drill Bit for Metal
Dremel Tool (optional)
Sandpaper (optional)
INSTALLALING RADIO STEPS IN BMW E87:
First pick out an aftermarket head unit. When selecting head unit keep in mind some will interface with steering wheel controls, but others will not, so you may lose that feature in your car. Second you will need a wire harness although you will not use the entire harness. You need RCA cables, Speaker, wire (some type of connector), and some tools, an aftermarket radio trey for your new cd player, an antenna adapter.
Note: with the double din you create the space by taking the sunglass case out and your ac control unit will fit in that space. That is how the navigation units are set up out of the factory. You will also need an amplifier kit you can simple purchase a battery wire in line fuse they also make a breaker box version now so you do not have to replace fuses. A ground wire and use a blue wire to run you amplifier remote.
Note: before proceeding with wiring unplug the battery.
You will have to do some wiring for the CD player. Also the only wires you will have to run are the RCA, and remote wire. The remote is in the trunk, but I prefer to use the CD player. If you are going to add subs and another amplifier you will need to run your remote from the starter.
Now with the CD player follow the wire diagram that comes with the aftermarket wire harness, but do not wire in the speakers cap them off. Next it is time to get to work in the trunk, First figure out where you are going to mount your new amplifier then Remove the old amplifier put in a box to restore to factory or sell on eBay.
Next you can get your wire guide out of your service manual. You are going to slice into the wire harness to the speaker wires going out, use you speaker wire to do this. I take some tape and label each wire as I do this.
Once you complete this you will plug your RCA and remote into the amplifier. Next you will run your battery wire, and ground wire. Make sure you put the inline fuse in place about 12 inches from the battery. Hook the amp up.
Note: when doing your install in the trunk remove all the carpet.
Now it is time to hook your speaker wire in the appropriate terminals on your amplifier, and connect your battery backup.
TESTING THE RADIO STEPS IN BMW E87:
Now test your system and make adjustments. Note: if your amp does not have base block built in you will need to purchase base blockers for all speakers expect the large door speakers, and year speakers.
A word about the radio installation kit you are about to install. There are many manufacturers of radio installation kits for this vehicle. Each manufacturer produces slightly different variations of the same kit, and a few make individual kits for specific vehicles. The pictured installation kit shown in the illustrations below is a standard kit used for many. Radio installation kits change with the model and years of production of the vehicle. When selecting a kit for this vehicle, make sure the kit you purchase states on the package the installation kit will work with your vehicle model and year. Some kits may require additional setup. Certain kits may be multi function kits designed to work with multiple vehicles and may require the installer to remove break away screw mounting tabs attached to the kit that are not required for your particular vehicle.

What steel is my car antenna made of?
I have an Isuzu trooper and someone had bent the top of the antenna at some point. It was extremely difficult to get back into place, even with a wrench. Partly due to the fact that is was hard to bend and on top of that is was very 'springy'. That got me thinking and i went to the machine shop and looked at some bar stock of about the same size. 304 stainless was much easier to bend and stayed bent even after small deflections. I am not sure what exact type of steel we have in the shop for cold rolled and drill rod, but both samples I tried were also easier to bend and less springy.
I am just wondering what type of steel my antenna could be. And if this question or my test methodology seems silly, I would like a little eduation
Thanks for taking the time.
Most likely it's a heavily cold worked steel, or perhaps a heat treated high carbon steel- either would show the behavior you describe.
The steel has been hardened, so that it is more difficult to get it to take a set. In engineering parlance, we say that the yield strength has been increased. Spring wire, or music wire, are the classic things that have had their yield strength increased by cold working, or heat treatment, or both.
You can get 304, especially sheet, in the quarter-hard, half-hard, or full-hard condition, and you'll find those are quite springy. Interestingly enough, you'll find that the full hard stuff is quite attractive to a magnet.
There's a lot of good books about the topic- a free one I recommend is John Verhoeven's METALLURGY OF STEEL FOR BLADESMITHS, a 200 page well written text. You can find it with a little searching. A better book for beginners, found in many libraries, is Daniel Brandt's "Metallurgy Fundamentals".
Good luck, and write if there's more I can explain!
