In reviewing numerous law office case management software packages, we're constantly amazed at the number of over-priced packages that have "automatically creates a case number" high on the list of features as if it's a difficult thing to do, or even impressive as a package feature. Too, most of these packages simply create a 6-digit number and start at 000001 then go to 000002 and so on and don't allow you to customize.

We suggest that case numbers should be codes that tell you much more than a simple number does, but at the same time, should have a simple format so you can easily create them and read them on the fly.

Let's look at a simple yet informative case number:

20100310-FL-CC-JS-009

Let's break this down a bit:

  1. 20100310 is the date. Use the descending date format since it's easier to look up cases with a time-frame reference. Descending dates are arranged starting with the year, then month, then day, so in the example above, the case was started on March 10th, 2010.
  2. Next, is a two-letter code of your choice that indicates what type of case this is. In our example above, "FL" stands for "Family Law." Here are some suggestions: CL - Contract Law, PP - Product / Process, CD - Criminal Defense, etc. You can skip this if you only practice one type of law.
  3. Your Sub-Code is a second two-letter code clarifying the type of case. In our Family Law example above, "CC" stands for Child Custody. Create a list of applicable sub-codes and keep these listed in a "reference file" along with your case-type codes from # 2.
  4. Using the client's initials as part of your case number is optional depending on the sensitivity of the case and the client's desire for anonymity. In our example, we made up the name "Jane Smith" and used JS. We certainly do not recommend using the client's name in the case number.
  5. If you have a client that may provide multiple cases, put the actual number of the case for that client in parenthesis. In this example, this would be our 9th case for Jane Smith. If this is a single case with little chance of repeat business from this client, you won't need to put any numbers at the end.

Hints and Tips:

  1. When creating a case file number, use it when naming word processor or spreadsheet files so everything can be searched and/or called up using the case number. Also, write the number on any folders and use it on stickers that might go on CD / DVD cases, cassette tapes, evidence boxes, etc.
  2. Naming your computer files also makes it easy to search since most systems will let you search for part of the file name using some sort of "wild card" such as the asterisk*. For example, if you wanted to see a listing of all Family Law cases in 2010, you'd enter the search string 2010*FL*.doc (if you were searching for Microsoft Word ® files). Not only that, but simply listing them by file name will automatically show them in chronological order by virtue of their case number alone.
  3. Rather than buy complex and over-priced software packages, you can easily use the software that probably came with your computer such as your word processor and spreadsheet mentioned above, and a calendar / contact program such as Microsoft Outlook ®.

Auto Sound Systems And Developing Technology

Finding auto sound systems that can keep up with the constantly evolving technology of today is a real challenge for many car and sound enthusiasts not only around the nation but also around the world. There was a time in the not so distant past when car stereos that had CD players or CD disc changers where the cutting edge of technology. New technology however has nearly rendered the CD players in cars as obsolete as long forgotten 8-track players. The sad news is that many carmakers are clinging to the old days and only offer something as modern as cassette players as standard equipment for auto sound systems.

I think those days will soon be forgotten, as cassettes are no longer even in mainstream production. You should also find that as CDs are rapidly becoming replaced by MP3s that take up very little space in our cars and homes, one day very soon we may see that music companies have decided it is no longer cost effective to produce CDs and render all music to digital formats. So, what does this mean for auto sound systems? It's actually good news for savvy manufacturers are well as savvy consumers who have their eyes on the future and the growing role technology is playing in our lives and as well as our commute to work.

We've seen a recent introduction of satellite radio to our selection of auto sound systems. These stations offer the allure of no commercial interruptions to your music play in exchange for the price of a monthly subscription. At the moment there are two major companies that offer this service to consumers and each have rather proprietary equipment for their use and installation into your car. They are actually offering some rather tempting offers in order to encourage subscribers. Among those wonderful offers are auto sound systems for your vehicle at less than $100 with a prepaid year of subscription services.

For the satellite radio companies this indicates a constantly growing pool of prospective subscribers and the cost of the equipment is a drop in the bucket when compared to customer loyalty and being on the cutting edge of sound technology. The drawback is that you must decide which service you wish to go with before making the purchase. Also while they offer a very nice auto sound system (bare bones kind of kit that only allows for the radio reception in most cases) at a very sweet price, if you want upgrades such as MP3 compatibility, CD players, CD changers, DVD players, GPS, or any number of other new and advanced technology you will still have to purchase those for your sound system at an upgraded price. There are a few packages that come with these things, but the price is a little on the hefty side. Oh the sacrifices we will make for a more enjoyable daily commute.

Know what your expectations are before you decide to purchase the auto sound system of your dream or you could find that it is more the stuff that nightmares are made of than sweet dreams. Do not live in constant fear that if you buy today you will find something you like better 6 months from now, that is a reality. Technology is growing and evolving at a frightening pace. Find the auto sound system that you like best today and make that your purchase. This is a much better option than waiting around indefinitely and purchasing one just as your warranty expires on your car and it's time for a trade in and another auto sound system.

Car mp3 tape player problem?

I have a auto reverse cassette player in my chevrolet caprice '91. So I bought a cassette adapter to play my mp3 player/ipod on and when I put the tape in, I just heard a clicking noise coming from the cassette player and some static in my speakers. Then I tried it on a regular stereo cassette player and it worked fine. So is it something wrong with the deck in my car or do I need to keep looking for another adapter? An if its the deck is there anyway to fix it?

I had the same problem, easily fixable. all you have to do is take the back off of the cassette and move the wire so that it comes out of the other side, there should be an opening on that side as well. The reason you were hearing the clicking sound is because the wheels that spin the tape only go one way. In the same breath, the "spindles" or whatever on the tape itself also only go one way. If the tape goes in upside down, then both of those are trying to go different ways, thus the clicking. When you put the wire on the other side of the cassette, this now allows you to put it in in a way that both are spinning there correct way. This was the problem I had and I asume you are now experiencing. I hope it helps.
