If you plan on doing some electrical wiring, the size of the wire to use is going to become an issue. Here is a quick guide on how the wire is classified.
The American Wire Gauge (AWG), also known as the "Brown and Sharpe" wire gauge system is a standard used in the United States and other countries to denote the diameter of nonferrous electrically conducting wire. There are 40 different wire sizes in the AWG system.
As the number of the gauge size increases, the diameter of the wire decreases. This tends to cause confusion when the system is not understood. The reason for the backwards method of denoting the size is that it is based on the number of times the wire must be drawn through drawing dies to produce the smaller size. Thus a 22 gauge wire needs to be drawn through the die more times than a 0 gauge wire. Steel wire uses a completely different measuring system and should not be confused with electrically conducting wire gauges using AWG.
The larger size gauges are denoting by the use of zeros. 0000 wire is normally denoted as 4/0 wire. 4/0 wire has a diameter of 0.58 inches. The smallest size is 40 gauge which has a diameter of 0.0032 inches. It takes six size increases to double the diameter of the wire. Although the ratio is not exact, it is close. The 40 gauge diameter of 0.0032 inches increases to 0.0063 inches in 36 gauge wire.
Each AWG gauge size can be rated for a maximum number of amps of load that it can safely carry. This is called the ampicity of the wire. It is depended on several variable factors such as the type of insulation, ambient conditions where the wire is being used, and the length of the wire run. Proper wire sizing is of utmost importance. An overload of the wire's ampicity would cause the generation of heat. Although copper or aluminum wire would take a large amount of heat before melting, the wire insulation would melt much quicker. This would increase the possibility of arching and a subsequent wire hazard.
In other parts of the world, the metric system is used and the AWG gauge system is not used. The metric wire measuring system uses the cross sectional area expressed in square millimeters. The cross sectional area is used rather than diameter because it is a better reflection of the load carrying capacity of the wire. The metric system and the AWG system do not match up exactly. This difference is more pronounced in certain size ranges and leads to problems when the wiring is a mix of AWG and metric sized wires.

The company of Warren and Brown was founded as a partnership in 1921 by Mr Andrew C. Brown and Mr William H. Warren, commencing at this time as obbing engineers, specializing in tool making and gear cutting.
After carrying out work of this nature for several years, the Company's production focus shifted to the manufacture of tools to service the motor trade which was then in its infancy.
The business was gradually extended with the development of a number of production lines suited to automotive reconditioning equipment.
In December 1930 the partnership was converted into a proprietary company.
At the outbreak of World War 2 the factory's resources were used to aid the war effort and apart from manufacturing its normal range of products, the company took a leading part in production of tools and gauges for military purposes and was largely responsible for the more important tooling associated with .303 ammunition.
The company was next approached by the Government's Director of Machine Tools and Gauges and requested to undertake the manufacture of a range of elf centering chucks. These chucks had never been manufactured in Australia before and information regarding overseas manufacturing procedures was not available. Warren and Brown commenced an extensive design and tooling programme and after many initial problems made their first deliveries of chucks to Government in February, 1942.
By 1949 the continuing business expansion stretched the company's financial resources to the limit and in May, 1949 Warren and Brown Pty Ltd became part of the Repco organization and with the added resources available the company expanded into the heavier equipment field, adding products such as clutch rebuilders, spring testers, boring bars and other machines to its range.
In 1948, Warren and Brown took out patents on what has now become known as the ual Signal trip mechanism for their world renowned range of torque wrenches. The first wrenches were released onto the market in 1949 and to this day still hold the major share of the Australian market despite an onslaught of cheap imports. Warren and Brown torque wrenches are recognised as the bench mark to where other similar products aspire to be and have been sold extensively around the world and can be found in the toolboxes of some of the biggest names in world motorsport.
As a result of a significant change in ownership and corporate direction by the parent Repco Group in 1985, Warren and Brown was finally purchased by five of its management team in 1986 and relocated to its present site in Maidstone.
Renamed Warren and Brown and Staff, the company became a privately owned Proprietary Limited company.
Under this structure the company has continued as a major manufacturer and supplier of specialized tools to the automotive, industrial, electrical and electronic industries.
When the company applied its electronics expertise to its long established clinical air pumps, this resulted in the first switch mode circuit being designed and patented in Australia. This circuit, which can operate on either 12Volt DC or 90 to 260Volts AC enabled suffers of asthma, emphysema, cystic fibrosis and other respitory ailments to be fully mobile as the pump could operate in a car and aeroplane or from any domestic electricity system around the world.
As a tool designer and manufacture. Warren and Brown were approached by Telecom Australia (Telstra) to design and produce coax cable stripping tools. This has led to the development of many other tools for Telstra and other major companies and has provided a vehicle for Warren and Brown to enter the telecommunications industry with their widely accepted Optic Fibre Management System.
Warren and Brown is well established in export markets throughout the world with its traditional range of automotive tools and equipment and is currently building an international reputation for its telecommunications product range as the business develops rapidly. how to replace pc power switch (follow up question) ?
i had a question a while ago titled "how to replace pc power switch"..and one of the answer-person ( i think that makes sense..) said that using an 18 gauge or 18 awg wire to connect to a pc power switch is too big??...does anyone know if if's dangerous in terms of ruining my motherboard if i would use an 18 awg/gauge wire to make a new pc power switch???
You could run 18 Gauge or smaller on your power switch. The amperage draw on that wire is very low. The power supply handles the heavy amperage.
