Marine Stereos - A Party On The Lake
Haven't you always wanted to have a party out on the lake? Not by the lake, but on it! Imagine booming your stereo to all your favorite songs while floating miles into the ocean or a river. This is possible with marine stereos.
Marine stereos are entertainment systems that have been specially designed to work on a boat or yacht. Creating such a device does require special attention to outdoor and on-sea factors. For instance, an ordinary stereo couldn't survive out on the ocean floor because of an excessive amount of moisture and salty air. If the sun is shining brightly, excessive UV rays will eventually take their toll on a good stereo system.
Therefore, marine stereos have been designed exclusively for an on-water party. Stereos usually run from a 12 volt DC marine or a car battery. In order to really make the music travel you would have to install a separate amplifier (though some systems may come with an amplifier already attached to the system. Most importantly, your stereo would have to be waterproof.
Now there are marine stereos that are called weather resistant, which provide protection against rain and possibly some powerful floods. However, weather resistant marine stereos are not the same thing as waterproof stereos. Waterproof stereos are so well protected they could theoretically fall in the water and still be functional. This is not to suggest that you actually throw your stereo into the water on purpose. Still, you never know what could happen by accident.
You also have to consider anti-corrosion protection, which will prevent the stereo from suffering gradual erosion at the hands of excessive salt water and moisture. Modern marine stereos have special anti-corrosive coating over circuit boards, plated connections, and even the chassis.
The most exciting new feature for marine boat stereos is found in the auxiliary input capability. Why so? Because ordinarily you would only be able to listen to CDs, tapes or radio stations at this on-water party of yours. However, with an advanced model marine stereo you could also listen to MP3s, DVDs or songs from your iPod. Furthermore, you could even tune into satellite radio, which offers the best commercial-free and uncensored content in the world. Why listen to Rush Limbaugh on sea when Howard Stern is just a click away? (Come on, even Obama likes Howard more than Rush) What other types of options are popular among mariners?
A CD changer control is certainly a convenient feature for marine stereos, as is a wireless remote that lets you access your entertainment system from anywhere on the boat. Most mariners state that power is the most important element, besides adequate protection, because they want the noise to drown out the nautical environment. Why not? Why listen to endless waves when you could be jamming to Kanye West or at least Samuel E. Wright and his great rendition of "Under the Sea"?
Marine stereos are said to offer more stability and better quality than traditional vehicular radios. Get the party started by bringing your best music onboard!

How do you connect a boat stereo?
The manual is vague about the wiring aspect of the install. It simply says connect red to 12v source and black to ground. Is 12v source the battery terminal or the ignition switch/fuse panel? Where is ground on a fiberglass boat? Any place online with step-by-step instructions?
Most boats under the console(where the guages are) will have ground "block" where several ground wires meet, the wires will be black,if you cannot locate this block you can run additional wire from the negative side of your battery.
The posative (red) may have a similar "block" but not always,in this case its best to use a test light to find a "hot" wire. It`s best to use "switched" power with this wire(it`s hot with the key on,but no power with the key off)
The yellow wire (sometimes orange, check diagram carefully) is associated with "memory" for your clock/station presets etc. This wire should be connected to 12v "always hot "(you dont have to use this at all if your not worried about the memory function)
This last point is important, any cutting/splicing of wires should be soldered and the sealed with heat-shrink tubing to keep moisture out,"twist n tape" methods of wiring usually come back to haunt you.
Good luck!
