Here are some more information for Camaro Firebird:

Pontiac's second-generation ponycar was a little late for the party in 1970, but it was worth the wait! The 1970 Firebird was a completely new design from the ground up, not sharing any major suspension or body components with the previous model. The car was praised by the car magazines for its bold new styling, sports-car like handling, and excellent acceleration abilities when equipped with the right engine. It had been improved immensely over the first generation cars in almost every way.
The 1970 Pontiac Firebird rode on a 108" wheelbase, the same as the new Camaro. It was only available as a two door coupe; the convertible had been dropped from the lineup, and would not return as a factory option until 24 years later. The 70 Firebird came with bucket seats, front disc brakes, and a front stabilizer bar. There were four trim levels available: the base Firebird, the Esprit, the Formula, and the Trans Am.
The base car came with a 250 CID inline six cylinder engine and a three-speed manual transmission, but a 255 horsepower Pontiac 350 V8 and an automatic transmission were available options. The Esprit came standard with the same 350 V8 and three speed manual transmission, and an optional automatic transmission was also available. It had stiffer spring rates than the base car. The 1970 Firebird Formula can be easily identified by the dual forward-facing hood scoops, and it came with a 330 horsepower Pontiac 400 V8 (NOW we're talking!) and a three speed manual transmission. A four speed manual or an automatic transmission were available options. The Formula came with the same springs as the base car, but with heavier duty shocks, a larger diameter front stabilizer bar, and a rear stabilizer bar. It could also be special ordered with the same suspension as the Trans Am, and you could even get a Ram Air III (also called Ram Air HO) 335 HP 400 V8 in it.
The 1970 Trans Am was all about performance. It came with the Ram Air III engine above, but an optional Ram Air IV engine was available that produced 345 (370 according to some sources) horsepower. The base transmission in the Trans Am was a wide ratio Muncie four speed with a Hurst shifter. It came with 15" wheels, larger front and rear stabilizer bars than the Formula, the stiffer springs from the Esprit, and the heavier-duty shocks from the Formula. The 1970 Trans Am also had a shaker hood, which means that there was a rear-facing air intake scoop mounted atop the carburetor, and that scoop protruded through an opening in the hood to draw fresh, cool air into the engine. It had front and rear spoilers, and air extractors on both front fenders to allow hot air to escape from the engine compartment. The 70 Trans Am was only available in two color schemes, either white with blue stripes or blue with white stripes.
There were a total of 48,739 Pontiac Firebirds produced in 1970, including only 7,708 Formulas and 3,196 Trans Ams. The Formulas and Trans Ams were excellent performers due to the 400 cubic inch engine, with 0-60 MPH times in the six second range. When you combine the improved handling characteristics of the new platform with the power of the Pontiac 400 engine, the 1970 Pontiac Firebird was one of the best all around musclecars of the era. It is one of my favorite cars of all time.

Mercury MOntego the Muscle Car
Back in the 1950s thru the mid 1970s, Detroit automakers produced many automobiles that were out and out "muscle" automobiles. These types of vehicles shared the same traits : they were 2 door coupes with souped up engines, responsive transmissions, an aggressive exterior design, and a sporty interior. High fuel prices and changing tastes finally limited sales to the point where only a couple of models were produced beyond that period. Today, muscle automobile mania is back, notwithstanding even higher gas prices. Thanks to the Ford Mustang and to a lesser extent to sedan and truck models from Dodge, there is new interest in a category long given up. The future is bright for the muscle automobile segment as one more manufacturer, Chevrolet, considers bringing back one of its darlings of times past, the Camaro.
Besides the Ford Mustang there were a complete host of cars produced that at one previous point or another might have been considered a muscle car. In addition to the Mustang, the Ford Fairlane five hundred and Ford Torino did duty ; the Mercury Montego was another model; Chevrolet produced the Camaro and Corvette ; Pontiac the GTO, Firebird, and Storm ; Olds the 442 ; Yankee Motors' had its Javelin; Plymouth had the 'Cuda, and Dodge produced the Challenger and the Charger. Today, only the Mustang and Corvette survives although the Dodge Charger has returned as a 4 door muscle vehicle together with its sibling, the hot Dodge Magnum wagon.
Interestedly, it took Ford's redoing of the Mustang for the 2005 model year to stir the present muscle automobile age craze. Styled after Mustangs built in the 1960s, the present Mustang embraces a retro look while incorporating fresh technology. The result has been the Mustang now sells its complete 150,000 model capacity without incentives.
The Mustang has been provoking DaimlerChrysler to go ahead with a retro cruiser of its own. The Dodge Challenger concept car, appearing at automobile shows across the States, has been a massive hit and Chrysler plans on bringing the V8 hemi powered model back in 2009. Additionally, General Motors is considering giving its blessing on the Camaro, another car also making the rounds of the States automobile show circuit.
So, isn't it mad to bring back such gas hogs? Back in the early 1970s, the then current crop of muscle automobiles averaged only 10-12 miles to the gallon around town and fifteen or sixteen miles per gallon on the highway. Thanks to computer technology and efficiency, even the Corvette returns a very respectable twenty-eight miles to the gallon the highway. So, although fuel mileage will definitely be lower than lots of other models, the new group of muscle automobiles will still better the previous generation vehicles with fuel mileage eighty percent or more above the autos from the 1970s.
Fortunately, we continue to live in a fairly free country and what the customer wants, the customer gets. So, V8 powered muscle vehicles paired to six speed manu-matic transmissions, with sport handling, bucket seats, and better fuel economy will probably appeal to several. No, they won't be exact duplicates of yesterday's muscle autos, but they are going to provide the nostalgia and power that motorists seek. I can't wait!.

how hard is it to install a shift kit on a firebird or camaro?
Buying a Firebird wanna know how hard it is to install a shift kit on a car. Has anyone done it before. Let me know.
..Not hard at all. I have done several. One hint though. If doing it while the trans is in the car you will have to put ball checks in the top valve body section (above the plate) From the pictures you will see where they need to go. Put a gob of Vaseline in the hole/area where the ball goes and push the ball into the Vaseline. This will keep it in place so you can put the plate back on. Also saves the time and work of pulling the trans so you can roll it over.
P. S. Don't worry about the Vaseline going in the trans. There's about 3 gallon of fluid in there so it will be diluted to almost nothing. Plus Vaseline is a petroleum product anyway. I have never had one fail in the last 15 yrs.
