Although hiking doesn't necessarily require a great deal of equipment one item that is crucial to your enjoyment is a good pair of hiking boots. A good pair of hiking boots will give you comfortable support and provide the traction that you need for even the trickiest of surfaces. A bad pair of boots however can make a day's hiking sheer misery.

Hiking over any distance puts a great deal of stress on your feet and ankles, which is transmitted upward to the legs and affects your back and indeed your whole body. Although most people think in terms of bad boots giving you blisters, the real problem is not the possibility of blisters but a lack of good solid support.

A good pair of boots will provide both the stiffness and springiness that your foot and ankle need. You need to be able to press off the ground, whatever the surface, with confidence and know that your boots will support you. Without this support, sore feet and ankles, or even twisted ankles, are virtually guaranteed.

Many boots today are made from a variety of specialized materials but, perhaps surprisingly, leather is still a large component of really good hiking boots. It's no accident that leather has been used for many years in the manufacture of shoes and boots and is still used today because it is tough, water-resistant (when treated), has good stiffness and excellent moisture and thermal properties.

When we talk about comfort it's easy to substitute the word luxury these days but, when it comes to hiking boots, comfort is a necessity rather than a luxury. You need to be able to walk long distances without producing blisters or chafing and you need to be able to wear your boots for long periods of time without moisture building-up or excessive heat or cold becoming a problem.

Buy a pair of hiking boots that feel right for your feet and that doesn't simply mean buying boots that are the right size. Get boots that feels good the minute you put them on and don't be fooled by the old adage that 'they're bound to feel a little uncomfortable until you break them in'. Boots will of course wear in, but if they don't feel right when you buy them then they will rarely feel right later on.

Bear in mind too that hiking boots are not shoes. They should feel stiff and have little give on the outer sole and around the ankle if they are to do the job that they're designed to do.

You'll be scrambling over wet rocks, slippery gravel, flaking hills and muddy trails and, while no boot can cope perfectly with every eventuality, a good pair of hiking boots will come pretty close.

Modern well-designed hiking boots will utilize various materials and geometries to minimize slippage on wet rocks and maximize sticking power on flaking hill grades and Vibram lugs with some kind of tread should be a minimum requirement. These look a little bit like car tires, but with a little more plastic and a little less rubber.

There are of course other things that you should look out for, such as gusseted tongues that keep out stones and grit, but the major features covered here will provide you with an excellent starting point. The really serious hiker will probably possess several pairs of boots to cope with different forms of hiking but for the novice one good sound pair of boots will do for starters and, if you buy wisely, they should last you for many years.

Joining your local hiking club will put the resources of the club at your disposal and allow you to get advice and information on all aspects of hiking, including such things as which waterproof hiking boots to buy.

Car Rental Holidays: What to Bring When You Hit the Bushveld

Road tripping is a great way to see Africa and with car hire in South Africa being as affordable as it is, your overland adventure may simply be a click away. Car rental websites often have special offers and if you go through the trouble of checking regularly you are guaranteed to get a good deal.

Overland trips are a great way to spend family vacations. You can join up with a self-drive safari group, but if you’re feeling adventurous why not tackle the road on your own? It is simple enough to create an online itinerary and once you’ve landed in South Africa, all you’d need to do is buy supplies, back up your 4x4 car hire and be on your way.

Packing for a normal road trip may seem simple enough, but once you hit the bushveld things are a bit different. There are no 24 hour convenience stores and, except if you have booked place in expensive hotels and lodges along the way, you will be relying on your own camping gear come night-time. We have compiled a helpful list of packing ideas that should make your car rental road trip a bit more comfortable. These include:

· Being selective: Pack everything you plan to take for your car hire overland trip on your bed. Take a good look at it. Now pack half of that back into your closet. You won’t need it all and loading your car up with non-essentials like 14 changes of clothing will mean that there will be less space for things like water and tents. Furthermore, leaving some space in your luggage will make it easier to bring back souvenirs.

· Rethink your luggage: Suitcases are not ideal for an overland trip. Think more along the line of a duffel bag or a large backpack with a removable frame. If you will be travelling for long stretches at a time, it is a good idea to pack a small daypack to keep with you in the front of the 4x4. This should contain things like chronic medication, sunscreen, snacks, your travelling visa, as well as relevant maps.

· Toiletries: Bring everything you normally use and add some high factor sunscreen, insect repellent, lip balm and a hat. (We’re not talking a big flouncy garden party hat here – think Indiana Jones and you’re halfway there. The African sun is not a joke.) Also remember a pair of sunglasses. If you wear contact lenses, you may want to think about bringing along a pair of reading glasses – the air is very dry and may irritate your eyes initially.

· Other Africa essentials: The type of camping gear you bring is up to you. Some people like to rough it and sleep under the open sky, while others travel with tents that should technically qualify as mobile homes. Once you get to South Africa and you’ve secured your car rental, you will be able to tell what type of gear you can accommodate in your ride. Get in touch with a reputable outdoor store – some rent out camping equipment, which means you won’t have to buy your own. Aside from the tent, you’ll also need the following:

§ A sleeping bag and light blanket.

§ A roll-up or blow-up mattress. If you take the blow-up version remember to bring patches and glue to fix any unexpected punctures.

§ Mosquito netting if you are planning to sleep ‘al fresco’.

§ A washing line.

§ A solid torch with LOTS of spare batteries. Once you head out into the bushveld, chances are that you may not find any replacements, so with LOTS we do mean LOTS.

§ A camera with relevant batteries, chargers and film/memory card. If you do go the digital route, invest in a large memory card – these are not readily available in most developing countries.

§ A small first aid kit. This should include items such as pain killers, rehydration sachets, anti-diarrhoea medication, antihistamine tablets or cream, antiseptic cream, tweezers, after sun treatment, as well as sterile gauze and plasters.

And there you have it – a handy little list that will have you packing like a pro in no time at all. A well planned overland trip can be the experience of a lifetime. Why not call ahead and book your 4x4 car rental today?

How much would tint, decent pair of rims, cost on a car?

On a Chevy Cobalt, please list individually

DONT BUY CHEAP RIMS! If you are a person who likes to change the rims on your car every 6-12 months, then buy a cheap set. If you plan on keeping the same set of rims on your car for 4 years, dont skimp out. you want to buy from a reputible manufacturer. (Rays engineering, enkei, HRE, 5igen, etc). Next, you dont just want to buy 4. if you damage a wheel, and you cannot find a replacment, driving around with a different sized stock wheel will hurt the steering/suspension. If you end up buying a multi peice wheel, i would buy at least 1 extra rim, otherwise buy 5 wheels. Maintenance is another factor. Ive owned 4 sets of custom wheels in the last 7 years (3 different cars), and chrome/polished looks nice, but they are a bitch to keep clean. I ended up powder coating a set of enkeis, and besides being different then everyone else, they are a peice of cake to clean.
So a decent set of 4yr min rim life, with tires should cost around $1500-$2000.
Now tint can vary from $100-$1000. Its actually quite easy to do yourself. Im not sure if the colbalt has it, but alot of manufacturers make pre cut tint. However, i would recommend you have the rear window tinted by the pros. I tried to do it numerous times, but i could never get the airbubbles out of it. The 4 side windows cost $20 to do myself. The rear was $75 by the pros.
Also, if you decide to just let the pros do it, besure to tell them you want a single peice rear. a 2 peice rear will drive you nuts, because you will see that edge.
So a 4 door car with a 1 peice rear with limo tint should cost around $250-350.
