The classes of amplifiers are related to the time current flows in the amplifier. A class C amplifier will be biased below cutoff which means current only flows for less than 50% of the time. RF amplifiers rely on 'flywheel' effect to replace the rest of the waveform.
The less time current flows, the greater will be the efficiency of the stage (that is, power in vs power out).Class C amplifiers typically have efficiencies approaching 90%. By comparison, a Class A amplifier can not exceed 50% efficiency. This means over half the power input is wasted in heat. Note that without the tuned circuit providing 'flywheel' effect, or a very sharp filter, harmonic content would be so high that the amplifier would be unusable.
Class C amplifiers are used in the power stages of Transmitters. They are non-linear but can be linearly modulated. An AM or FM transmitter might use such an amplifier but the are not used with SSB.
