In the world of collectibles, China Crystal decoration glassware makes an interesting pursuit. The glassware is available in a variety of patterns and styles of decoration and reflects the history of manufacturing techniques. Collectible china crystal decoration glassware can be hand blown and crafted using techniques that are centuries old or it can be partly mass-manufactured or decorated. The styles also tell the story of taste and fashion through the ages from the fine elegance of the past to the practicality and casual lifestyles of the present.
Crystal Ware
The difference between glassware and crystal is the lead content. Glass is made of sodium and potassium while crystal is composed of sodium, silicone and lead. The lead content makes the crystal soft enough to cut and etch, changes the light diffraction and makes the crystal heavier. Whether referring to beverage serving pieces, decorative pieces such as vases, or figures, a piece is described as "full lead crystal" if it contains at least 30% lead. If it contains 24% to 29% lead, it can be called "lead crystal." Crystal glass or crystalline contains less than 24% lead.
One type of collectible china crystal decoration glassware is the elegant American glassware. This somewhat inaccurate name is given to handmade crystal glasses made by several American companies from the 1920's to the 1980's. Although easy to find during its height of popularity, this type of china crystal decoration glassware is not the common glassware also available during those years. Elegant glassware includes plain patterns, etched or cut patterns. Although colored patterns are rarer, the colors used range from cobalt and ruby to pale yellow and fuchsia.
They can also be trimmed with gold or platinum. The patterns of elegant glassware reflect the tastes of the decades in which they were popular. In the 1920's and 1930's, brides would choose a crystal pattern along with their patterns for china and silver. Manufacturers of elegant glassware began to give romantic names to their crystal patterns during this time. This type of china crystal decoration glassware reflects the trend toward elegant dining of the times.
It was not unusual for a household to have kitchen servants which made several courses the norm - each course having its own china, silver and crystal style. The trend toward more casual dining along with the inexpensive crystal that flooded the market following World War II drove most of the elegant glassware manufacturers out of business. The beauty, variety and the care taken in keeping this type of china crystal decoration glassware make elegant glassware very collectible.

Chipping a Turbocharged Car
Turbocharged cars are interesting creatures from a performance perspective. In stock trim from the factory, they often run a very conservative level of boost and fuel delivery. These cars make good amounts of power, but there is a vast reservoir of potential lying there, completely untapped. This is largely because automakers are afraid of the warranty issues that could be associated with turbocharged cars running at their absolute peak. These extra safety margins are built into the engine management software so that power is produced, but not to the point where stress might reach a dangerous level.
If you own one of these turbocharged beasts, such as the Dodge SRT-4 or the Cobalt SS, it can be frustrating to find out that your car's engine has been holding out on you. Many people, when they find out about how their engine computer is programmed, wonder if there is a way to bypass these restrictions and get the most out of their ride.
The answer is yes. Since modern engines are managed via computer software, the simple answer is that by reprogramming the engines computer or ECU, it is possible to wring every last ounce of power out of the engine. This is a lot easier to say that it is to actually do, however. Not all car companies are open about how their engine management is coded, and many of the tuners who work to decode these systems can find themselves spending a significant amount of time just figuring out basic ECU operations. However, given a large enough market, and enough time, even the most complex management software is analyzed and improved upon by performance companies.
How do these companies reprogram you cars computer? Once they have a firm understand of the vehicles software, they can then start to tweak it to test out the limits of the engine. There are quite a few different factors that can be played with in the pursuit of more horsepower and better performance: boost level, throttle response, the ratio of air to fuel at every given engine speed, and ignition advance, to give a few examples. This type of tuning is not only about peak power it is also about increasing the power band so that there is more power available no matter how fast or slow the engine is turning. This can really improve the drivability of your vehicle, and help reduce some of the lag experienced with the turbocharger.
Once everything has been figured out and tested, it is coded onto a computer chip. Some companies will send you the chip so you can install it yourself, (it usually just snaps in and out of the ECU), while others will require you to ship them your ECU so that they can install it for you.
Chipping a turbocharged car can be a great way to unlock its hidden power. However, doing so will often times void your warranty, and could put your engine and other parts of your drive train under more stress than they is used to. Make sure that you get the whole story from whichever chip company you are considering before you install the new part in your car.

whats the best deal?
im buying my first car (im 17)this spring and have been shopping around for different deals. Ideally i would like something with all wheel drive because of my job in winter (i work for a snow removal company and the time i go to work the streets arent clean....im supplied with a truck when i get there). i can live without it however. anyway my dilema is this should i buy a 4wd 1992 chevy K1500 crew cab for $3500 CDN or a 2006 chevy cobalt for $59 CDN a week for almost 5 years or a chevy aveo/ pontiac pursuit for about $165CDN a month for 2 years (lease)
or if you have any other suggestions...im open to em
i would stay away from a lease, they are cheaper, but you dont own anything when your done, youve just wasted all your money and have nothing, like an apartment. but if its all you can do its better than nothing i suppose. personally if i were in your situation, i would go with the older chevy, you can pay it off much sooner and your not bound to anything. then you have more room, your young and you dont need to be in debt yet, trust me i was in the same boat and got a brand new car, and then a few years ago it was almost paid off, and i sold it to buy another new one, i would give anything to go back and keep my old car and not have a huge car payment. and the aveo you would probably never get any money for if you tried to sell, because those are so cheap new. stay cheap, save your money, youll be better off in the long run.
