Here are some more information for Cougar Torino:

It has been immortalized in pop culture (remember Steve McQueen in the movie Bullitt?) and on America's streets. Forty years after its debut and with its current version channeling the original, the Ford Mustang is as relevant and popular as ever. Today, we profile the first generation Ford Mustang and ask the question: Is this the most popular classic car ever?
Before Chrysler, Lee Iacocca's crowning achievement
Lee Iacocca was the corporate face behind Chrysler in the 80's and 90's. But his contribution to American automotive history includes something much more significant. As a VP with Ford in the early 60's, Iaccoca was the driving force behind the design and development of the first generation Mustang, which was introduced to the public at New York World's Fair and rolled off the assembly line only eighteen months after its' production was approved. The Mustang was based on the compact Ford Falcon to control costs and gained instant popularity with the American public. More than 400,000 vehicles hit the road in its first twelve months on the market, including almost 70,000 convertibles.
Have it your way
One of the more noteworthy aspects of the early Mustang was the litany of options available for it. Everything from manual and automatic transmission, six or eight cylinder engines, and comfort and styling options like air conditioning, vinyl tops and special wheels gave every Mustang buyer the opportunity to create a unique, customized vehicle representing their taste, style and driving habits. Initially available only as a coupe or convertible, the Mustang was offered in GT digs by the spring of 1965, as well as a Shelby-designed GT-350 as a 2+2 Fastback later that year.
Often imitated, never duplicated
The first generation Ford Mustang was produced until 1973, after which a string of flawed successors attempted to recapture the magic of the original. From its inception in 1964, the original Mustang has captured the attention of the driving public, and remained relevant for generations. Throughout its four year production cycle and beyond, the original ponycar reigns as a "must have" for the vintage vehicle collector.
Introduction Date: April 17, 1964
Original base price: $2,360 (half what a new Corvette cost)
Almost known as: Cougar, Torino, Tunderbird II, Colt
Engine and Transmissions: 120 Horsepower Inline 6-cylinder, 220 Horsepower V-8, 225 Horsepower V-8, 271

Mustang History and Mustang Parts
The Post war Ford Mustang is easily one of the most beloved cars of the 20th Century. The brain child of Lee Iacocca it stands as one of most recognized symbols of 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73 and current time. Iacocca had a vision for a Mustang that could be all things to all people. From very a sporty Boss 429 to a 1965 Mustang 6 cylinder family cruiser the Ford Mustang was an immediate sensation in 1965. Of course many other parts options came with the different engines, different heads, intake manifolds, transmissions, ram air, superchargers just to name a very few.
Interior color options are almost to many to mention but I think it is important to at least give you some names for reference:
Interior Colors:
Red
White
Blue
Ivy Gold
Palomino
Aqua
Parchment
Saddle
Dark Red
Nugget Gold
Ivy
Ginger
Medium Green
Avocado
That's not meant to be a complete list, the number of actual trim codes is staggering (several hundred). If you ever need help sorting yours out please feel free to email me and I will be glad to help you if I can. Many other changes and interior options were available throughout the years. Changes always seemed to include Instrument Bezels, Steering Wheels, Carpet Kits, Headliner Colors, door panels, consoles and of course upholstery colors.
Wheels were also an important part of the changes that were made from year to year on the Mustang. Again, there are many to mention but this is a pretty important part of the exterior changes made to the Mustang so I'll give you most of them.
While we are on Interior let talk just a minute about radios. From 1966 to 1973 the choices for radios were limited at best. The choices were:
AM
AM / FM
AM / FM / 8 TRACK
The most rare of these is the AM / FM. I would have personally thought that it would have been the AM / FM / 8 TRACK. However, except for the complete purist, most people are replacing the old radios with something better. As long as you DON'T CUT THE DASH! Here is a page that gives some options for MUSTANG RADIOS.
Many of the Mustangs being restored now also are in need of dash replacement. Wheels:
Standard Steel Wheels 13" x 4.5"
Standard Steel Wheels 14" x 5"
Standard Steel Wheels 15" x 5"
Styled Steel Wheels Chrome
Styled Steel Wheels Argent
Magnum 500 Wheels
5 Spoke Shelby Wheels
10 Spoke Shelby Wheels
Kelsey Hayes Mag Star
Styled Steel Wheels Slotted
There are many Variations of the years and availability of the rims. So, without a build sheet never depend on which wheels came with your Mustang. From year to year you could almost depend that the grill would change too. The ever present pony would be surrounded by and ever changing corral or sometimes no corral at all.
There were many packages sold too but here is some to keep in mind:
Packages:
GT Package
California Special
Colorado Special
Twister Special
Boss Package
Indy Pace Setter
Indy Pace Car
Mach 1
Grande
Sprint
The packages each had many variations too. Colors, fabrics and much more.
Lee Iaccocca went into the project with very specific ideas for the coming Mustang. However, even as general manager of Ford he had to prove his plans to build the Mustang. Ford would need to spent tens of millions of dollars to produce the Mustang and it was not an easy sell. After exhaustive market research and more than a year of styling changes, the Mustang was finally ready to be built. The new design was to fit in Iacocca's specifications:
Price less than $2,500.00
Less than 180" long
Four Passenger
Bucket Seats in the front
Floor shift
6 cylinder standard, V-8 Available
Sporty look
A long, long option list from the factory and dealer
As the design took place it is interesting to know that out of the clay models that were designed as prototypes the one that was chosen was named "Cougar" designed by David Ash Executive Designer. Then the name was changed to the "Torino" before finally settling on the Mustang. On April 17, 1964 the Mustang officially became available for sale. It was big news at the time and showrooms were crowded with people waiting to see the Mustang. Scott Burgess: Mercury created memorable rides
Mercury's cars were rarely originals, built off of Ford chassis with slightly different sheet metal, but many were memorable -- some not for the right reason. But what a ride Mercury provided.
