Budgerigars are a lot of fun, but require more attention and special care than the more common household pets. This article covers the basics of pet bird care.
I will cover the following topics: Nutrition, Environment, Housing, Activity, General care, and Things to avoid.
Nutrition
As with any pet, the nutritional and quality aspects of the food you provide is extremely important for the well-being of your bird. A quality seed mix is essential, as is fresh vegetables daily. Apple slices, grated carrot, and chopped lettuces are among the favorites of many birds, helping to provide essential nutrition.
Environment
Since Budgerigars are native to Australia, it is essential their environment is not overlooked.
-Temperature
A healthy bird will be able to tolerate most temperatures that are comfortable to its owner. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, as this may cause discomfort and even sickness if extreme changes occur.
-Humidity
As with temperature, humidity is not a problem to most birds. A higher humidity can benefit your budgerigar, but is not essential.
-Light & Fresh Air
Fresh air and direct sunlight for at least part of the day is essential to the well-being of your budgerigar. Always be sure to provide ample shade, as excessive sunlight can cause your budgerigar to overheat.
Housing
-Cage
An oversized cage is a must. A large cage provides room for eating and play, which are so essential to a happy, healthy bird. The cage should be made of strong, non-toxic materials, designed for safety and easy cleaning. A cage which is wider than it is tall is best for budgerigars.
-Perches
"Variety is the spice of life" Variety in types of materials used and perch diameter. Provide various sized perches made of non-toxic woods. Never place perches over food and water dishes, as droppings may contaminate the food or water and cause bacteria to build which could make any bird sick. Also never use harsh sand perches or sandpaper perch covers, as this can lead to foot trouble.
-Food & Water Bowls
Wide bowls that latch to the side of the cage are best for your budgerigar. Deep dishes may cause wasted food as opened seed shells may hide seeds deeper which may never be eaten. Again, never place food or water dishes directly beneath perches to prevent contamination.
-Hygiene
Clean both the cage floor and food and water dishes daily to keep tabs on your budgerigar's health and to prevent bacteria build-up. A deep-clean of the cage, dishes, perches and toys should be done weekly.
-Cage Liners
To line the bottom of the cage and to assist in the ease of cleaning, old newspaper or paper towels should be used. Never use corn-cob or other pelleted material, as a bird may choke on the small pieces.
-Security
Most birds, budgerigars included, need a 'personal space' to call their own where they can retreat to, sleep, and otherwise get some privacy. A good way to provide this is to hang or place inside the cage, near a perch, a small paper bag, hand towel or washcloth.
Activity
Your budgerigar, like all pet birds, needs to spend supervised time outside the cage. This provides an opportunity to exercise, take baths, play with toys and other forms of birdy entertainment.
-Toys
Toys are one of those indispensable aspects of your budgerigar's existence. Providing a variety of toys provides your bird with entertainment, mental stimulation, and an outlet for that never-ending desire to chew. 'Chewable' items include wood branches, pine cones, natural 'bird-safe' ropes, wood blocks, and acrylic shapes.
General Care
Regular care of the beak, nails, feet and feathers is recommended. See your veterinarian for advice.
Things to Avoid
*Sandpaper perch covers.
*NEVER use non-stick cookware near a bird, the fumes travel quite a ways and can kill a bird within minutes.
*Mite sprays or boxes.
*Many houseplants are toxic to birds/parrots, a quick search online will provide ample resources.
*Never leave ceiling fans running while your bird is out of its cage.
*Cats, dogs, open water such as a toilet, sink or aquarium, and young children can also pose a threat.

Life Insurance – Take Cover
In the extensive field which is insurance, life insurance stands out as one of a few which is usually taken out for someone else’s benefit. Insurance covering house, mortgage, valuables, travel etc. is intended to cover the holder against loss as a result of accidents, breakdowns, delays, theft and a vast number of other circumstances. Life insurance on the other hand is usually intended to benefit those left behind when the holder dies, if only to provide funds which will diminish to some extent the problems caused by that person’s unexpected departure.
There are of course exceptions to the above, as in the case of an endowment policy which is used as a form of saving in that it pays out at the end of the specified period. Even this has the provision to pay out on the earlier death of the holder, so it does not provide solely for the benefit of that individual. If this is the type of cover which you are considering, ask your broker for details of the various forms, as in Unit Linked or With Profits.
If however it is your intention to protect your beneficiaries from financial problems occurring in the event of your death, you have a good variety of choices. It is as well to bear in mind that, particularly in more complex estates, it can take quite some time for cash to be made available after a death to meet expenditure which was originally agreed to by the deceased. This may include the funds necessary to meet funeral expenses, which are not debts which can be put off for any length of time. At the last check payment by instalments was not a feature applying to interment costs, nor is yet socially acceptable to ‘take the hat round’ for contributions! If you do take out cover for these charges, make sure that your family are aware of this; it could save them from a panic situation when the time comes.
So what is available in varieties of life insurance? The answer is that there is a surprising range of policies, each designed to meet a different need. It will have to suffice here to cover the broader outlines of some of these varieties and leave the intended policy holder to discuss the finer details of their needs with their broker.
Perhaps one of the more common policies issued is the ‘Whole of Life’ which means just what it says. You will be covered for the whole of your life, subject to the caveat common to any insurance, that you must keep up the payments; default on a payment could result in the policy being cancelled. This insurance provides cover for a specified sum and will be paid out to your heirs in the event of your death. If after a reasonable number of premiums have been paid, you should decide that you no longer require the cover, then there should be a cash value when the policy is surrendered.
Term insurance is a policy which is taken out to cover a period which you specify, and is usually intended to provide funds for your heirs when you die. If you don’t die within the term specified there is no payout and no cash value - the policy simply terminates.
A variety of this is a Level Term policy which is usually used to protect an ‘interest only’ mortgage in that it will be set at the level of the capital sum which will be due on completion of the interest payments. Because the length and value of the policy can be established at the outset it has the advantage of unvarying costs, which makes expenditure control easier.
In the opposite direction, an Increasing Term policy is linked to inflation increases. This avoids loss of value but adversely affects the premiums.
The lowest cost term policy is the Decreasing Term (or mortgage protection) policy. This provides cover for the steadily decreasing total debt of a repayment mortgage, and thus the risk factor is also heading for a final zero.
Perhaps one of the best policies for providing for your family’s needs after your death is Family Income Benefit cover. The fixed term ensures that the potential total payout reduces steadily, thus reducing the overall cost.
One of the less altruistic life insurances is the Endowment policy which has a guaranteed payout at the end of a defined term (usually at least 10 years) or in the event of your death. There are a number of variations on this theme which can increase the payout sum or alter the premiums as time goes by; you may wish to explore these. The big advantage here is that with this type of policy you may collect the benefit sum yourself.
The above is only a rough outline of some of the policies available. To enable you to examine these or others in detail you need to talk to a broker. Initial contact via the internet is the quick and easy way to do this and may well be the best ‘mouse click’ which you have ever done.

Can a pell grant cover the entire cost of attendance(including housing) at a University?
I'm just curious. I currently attend a community college and my pell grant covers 100% + of my tuition and books. It doesn't include housing though, because there's no on campus housing. However, I'm transferring in January to a University and I'm looking at on campus apartment housing. Will this be covered by a Pell Grant in addition to my tuition/books?
I really doubt your Pell grant will cover all your expenses. I am a commuting student at a state university and my Pell doesn't even cover all of my tuition and book expense. As one of the previous posters commented, you should check into obtaining a loan. Depending on the type, you may have a 6 or 9 month deferment (grace period) for repayment after you graduate. Check with financial aid and your community college advisor, there are sometimes scholarships (academic achievement, honor society, etc.) available even if you transfer mid-year like I did.
