Using a Guitar Pod or amp simulator is nothing new these days. You will find these devices on many top 10 albums because they are a dream for studio players who can put the unit in their back pack, rather than rent a van for all their different amps and cabs. They are also becoming increasingly popular with the new more rugged Live version, which again is versatile, and the results are stunning.
One of the pluses of these units is also a downside for a lot of players, even some experienced ones. While the range of tones is infinite and there is every effect under the sun that you may ever need, this sometimes makes getting your tone difficult because there is so much to choose from, almost an embarrassment of riches so to speak.
What is the best way to get a good tone from these digital devices then?
Keep it simple, start with every effect off and just use the pure amp tone, play slowly and tweak things slightly and slowly, then test. Often it is good to get a tone you like, go away for 5 minutes and listen again, or record some of it solo or in a track, then play it back and see how it sits with the other instruments.
Try and do the setup in the actual place that you will be playing in, because every room has different characteristics and can sound vastly different from one another, even the same room can sound different with more people in it. Once you have dialed in something you like, play a number with the band if you are in a rehearsal or sound check situation, then adjust.
Stroke this baby like a pussycat, do not turn everything up full and expect it to sound great. The gain is the main offender, so keep it below the mid-point and slowly increase it, but again make the changes small and then listen.
There are of course a plethora of effects included in these units, also many cabs and mics, as well as positioning of the mics and many other tweaks. Go through the various settings slowly and see what you like, you will find that you more than likely save 3 or 4 and that will do for most of your work.
Taking this beast out to a gig can be a double edged sword. On the one hand it is portable and versatile, on the other you are at the mercy of the sound engineer who may never have heard your band before, or even like your music.
You can go direct to the PA if it is decent enough and there is adequate monitoring, or you can run it through an amp and also run it through the PA like a traditional setup, unless of course it is a vocal only bar type PA, then you will definitely need an amp.
There are no tubes in these babies, but they sound amazing if set up right, take the time to get a good tone, then adjust for the room or situation and you will be fine.
Amplifier modeling has become so good that pro musicians are taking these devices on the road and replacing their old tube amps.
