Many organizations do have their own versions of the internet video phone. In this article I examine an internet video phone from D-LINK- one of the networking companies. An internet video phone enables one to look at people he or she is calling as he talks to them. At 30 frames per second, this Video Phone does provide very smooth video conferencing over the Internet.
D-Link which is one of the emerging networking companies is pleased to introduce its latest phone in broadband Internet videophone technology. It is called the i2eye DVC-2000 Broadband VideoPhone. It is a full-featured desktop videoconferencing phone having a built-in 5" color Liquid Crystal Display screen. Since this device is a standalone device, one does not need a computer or television to video conference over the Internet. This internet video phone uses advanced video compression technology; therefore it maximizes the image and audio quality within the specified and available bandwidth. It has the capability of sending and receiving video at up to thirty frames per second in order to deliver real-time audio and video content.
This devices unique Auto IP Mapping feature does make initiating a video conference call over the Internet simple just like dialing a phone number. Instead of identifying ones DVC-2000 by an IP address, one will assign it a "phone number" of his choice. As incoming i2eye callers dial that particular phone number, a remote directory service, which is provided by D-Link free of charge, automatically converts it into ones i2eye's corresponding IP address.
This internet video phone features a very intuitive user interface as well as keypad. This makes it very easy to answer incoming videophone calls and also initiate new ones. One is able to browse through all names and numbers in its built-in phonebook directory. It provides a feature for one to control the display of the LCD screen by switching between the Full Screen and Picture-in-Picture mode. For added convenience, a speakerphone mode is provided to enable one with hands-free videoconferencing.
The DVC-2000's privacy mode does block video and audio from being sent to the other end of the call. One can also activate the Do Not Disturb mode to avert all incoming calls. And most importantly, it makes it possible for one to know who is calling before he or she answers with the built-in caller ID.
A Setup Wizard does guide one step-by-step through the setup process. It makes it easy to personalize and change ones videoconferencing options. One can also connect the DVC-2000 to a standard phone line and be able to use it as a voice-only analog telephone.

Singurriverhijacked
The Tata Motors have been taking possession of a whole river for their car factory in Singur. As a result, the big question that comes up for the farmers with land outside the Tata factory area is – how and from what source will they get the necessary water for their cultivation.
It seems possible that owing to water scarcity jute cultivation in Singur may go the way of permanent extinction . Under the excuse of repair and maintenance the state government itself has been handing over the canal to the Tatas. The iirigation Minister Subhas Naskar says, it will be seen that the farmers Are not adversely affected in any manner. But this assurance cannot at all help the panicked farmers to get over their anxiety.
The small river Julkia flows through Bajemelia, Joymollah and Berabari of Singur. Though called a river, actually it is but a wide canal. After flowing several kilometers it ends in the river called Gheea. During the monsoon this Julkia river swells to the brink with rain water. The water flows into the Gheea river. So Gheea too becomes full. It is by using the water of this river, which comes under the DVC irrigation system, that the farmers grow their crops on the land. Thus the farmers have to depend mainly upon Julkia and Gheea for their cultivation. But recently, the bulk area of the river Julkia – 6.10 kilometers – has been appropriated by the Tatas.
It has been known that for producing every one-million-wallah car of Tata the requirement will be 24 cusec water. The only way to harness this water is to occupy the river. Therefore, without once considering the need of the farmers, the State Government too has handed over this river to the Tata group. The land acquired by Tata spreads across both the banks of the river. Apart from the land, a portion of the river has also been seized by Tata. A gate has been installed at the zero chain point of Julkia, near the junction of the two rivers. At the interval of 6.10 kilometers, another gate has been built at Julkia chain number 200, near the railroad. In between these two points there are lockgates. A moat is being made encircling the boundary walls of the Tata area. This moat is planned to hold rain water. That water will flow down into Julkia. Now the Tata executives will control the water of Julkis, retaining or releasing it through the lockgates according to their own convenience. According to the local farmers, if Julkia water is withheld, the other river, i.e., Gheea, too will dry up. The consequent water scarcity will have serious adverse impact on cultivation over a vast area. The Singur jute farmers used the Julkia river for their crop, at different stages of cultivation, wetting, extraction, etc. But now that this river has been hijacked by the Tatas eventually jute cultivation will be abolished in Singur. This is the apprehension of the farmers.
Besides this, the Tatas have already sunk not less than ten deep tubewells . According to scientists, if the Tatas pump out this quantity of water , before long the water level of the entire area will sink considerably lower. There will be a vacuum at the underground layers. This will further affect the farmers and residents of the Singur villages ; even the possibility of arsenic seeping into their daily used water cannot be ruled out.
The State Irrigation Department (Govt of West Bengal) has undertaken two projects in Singur for the benefit of the Tatas’ car factory. One is constructing the drainage system around the factory boundaries; and the other id ‘renovation’ of the Julkia canal that flows through the area taken over for the car factory. The proposed budget of the State Irrigation Department on this account is 17.69 million rupees.
The State Irrigation Department and State Water Resources Department together have finalized a project of Rs. 7,77,99,227/- towards constructing a drainage system encircling the boundary walls of the factory. All the expenses towards digging the canal, cementing , filling up the dug up grounds, meeting the cost of chips and morram, transport and wage of construction labours, will be borne by the State Irrigation Department. An amount of Rs 22, 44,208/- has been earmarked for meeting contingency expenses.
The second proposed project is Julkia Canal Renovation project. It will cover a stretch of 6.10 Kilometers. The target year is 2007-2008. From the start point to the end-point of this stretch twelve R.C. sluice are being constructed on both the sides of Julkia. The estimated expense for each will be 10 lakhs. So the total expense for the sluice will be 120 lakhs. In all the estimated budget for this project for ‘renovation’ of Julkia river is 991 Lakhs. The blue print of this project has been drafted by Superintending Engineer of damodar Irrigation Circle under the State Irrigation Department, the Executive Engineer of the Lower Damodar[1] Section, and the Sub-Divisional Officer of Singur. …

If Julkia is hijacked, and the farmers are deprived of its water, from 5 to 6 thousands of farmers in Singur and Haripal block will be ruined. For the purpose of providing the Tatas’ car factory with adequate water supply a long stretch of Julkia river (more than 6 Kilometers ) is being usurped in the false name of ‘renovation’ ; by setting upo lockgates on either end of the stretch and setting up 12 R.C. sluice gates in between the river water is actually being handed over to the Tatas. The farmers of Singur and Haripal are seething in anger and panic.
Years ago a canal had been constructed to connect Singur with Damodar which flows far off in the west, with the target of providing adequate water to farmlands by means of improved irrigation system. The name of this canal is ‘Kānā’. The Kana flows round the various ends of Singur, and provides the farmer irrigation for cultivation work. Later on another river basin was created by further extending Kana; this is locally known as Julkia. Julkia flows through as many as 13 moujas, including 8 in Singur, and 5 in Haripal. This canal was opened with the main target of releasing the excess water from Kana during the monsoon. Though some claim it to be a drainage canal, actually its water has been used since long for cultivation by farmers of various segments of Singur including Chak Kalikapur, Dobandi, Talabhomra, Doarpota, Singhalpathan, Chowkhandipota, Dewanbheri, Baburbheri, and Natunbheri. But as a long stretch of this Julkia river falls within the area appropriated for the Tatas’ project, the farmers are threatened with ruin. Under the false excuse of renovation the State Irrigation Department, that is the government have been spending billions to create such a provision that the Tatas get the entire quantity of requisite water for their car production from Julkia itself.
Towards the east of Singur and Haripal Julkia connects with another canal, called Gheea. The Julkia water flows into Gheea. But in the name of canal renovation, -- while actually for providing the Tatas , an elaborate plan has been undertaken by means of erecting lockgates, sluice gates. This is actually an anti-irrigation plan, as a result of which farmers who cultivate on either of the two bans of Gheea, will also be deprived of water.
[Reader, please ‘consider, consider, ask’ ( à la Stephen Spender). If this is not anti-people then what is! Ruining the best fertile land of the state, pushing the large numbers directly related to the farming to starvation and slow death, turning the golden-emerald land into bleak barren desert! And all this to please a few nastily rich owners, unconditionally, shamelessly, throwing the last façade of socialist-humanitarian values to the wind. And who knows what other horrible schemes are up the sleeves of these anti-people forces? Is it possible that they too have been playing at the hands of some other more dangerous, extraterritorial forces ? And finally what is the mystery behind our government’s abject surrender to these evil forces! A time has come when we cannot and should not ignore such questions any more! WE cannot afford to be indifferent because the danger is now too close and has been knocking on our own very door…-- Translator.] (1788 words)
