Eagle Vision

Have you ever looked up in the sky and watched an eagle's majestic flight against the blue background?

If you have, you probably marvelled at the graceful confidence, sharp clarity and focused intention of this noble creature of prey.

For centuries, these creatures have inspired us and we have come to associate eagles with power, freedom, and transcendence.

So what lessons and insights about Life Success can we learn from these Masters of the feathered species?

1. Eagles see the Big Picture: As eagles fly and hover they can see the gorgeous panorama beneath them and view the whole picture unfolding in front of them. From that vantage point they can transcend the limited views of ground level. In life we also need to see the big picture and detach ourselves from the daily hassles of life. Unless we can see the Big Picture from a vantage point it will be difficult for us to identify our Core Values and Life Purpose.

2. They have a stable base. Eagles often use the same nest year after year. This gives them a solid base from where to fly. Likewise it is important that we too have a solid base of Core Values and a clear Life Purpose that keeps us grounded to what is important in life.

2. They move with Power. The flight of the eagle is the embodiment of grace and power. Watching an eagle fly gives you a feeling of awe and power that is generated by its mere presence and movement. Being aware of the presence we project around us and the way that we move can help us to use our movements and gestures to generate self-confidence and positive feelings.

3. They are clear and focused. Eagles have a sharp focus on their prey and move with single mindedness to capture their victim. At the same time they are adaptable and they can attack an assortment of prey according to what opportunity presents. This is a lesson we need to learn because unless we are clearly focused on what we want to achieve and move single mindedly towards our goal we can hardly achieve our Dream. On the other hand it is important to adapt to what life presents us with.

4. They are courageous and not afraid to take risks. Some eagles show great courage in attacking animals larger than themselves, many of which are capable of inflicting severe injury on the brave birds. The list of mammals recorded includes deer and their fawns, antelopes, lambs of mountain sheep, goats and calves, lambs, dogs, cats, foxes, and rabbits. Like eagles we have to take risks in life and go for HUGE Goals that may seem daunting and beyond our ability to achieve.

5. They are Energy efficient. Although eagles are fast birds of prey they are efficient at conserving their energy. By outstretching their pinions and leaning against the wind they soar and cover ground efficiently, biding their time for the right moment when to pounce and strike. In the same way we have to use our resources effectively and simplify the way we do things. By focusing on the important rocks of life and the activities that give us more results we will be soaring efficiently through lifes' challenges. By biding the time and pouncing on opportunities as they arise we will be utilizing what life provides us with.

6. They are quick to see opportunities and swift to take action. The eagles' vision is among the sharpest of any animal and so they are quick to identify opportunities. The spirited dash of this great bird in pursuit of its running or flying quarry denotes the power and swiftness of an eagle.s flight. Likewise it is important that we are quick to grasp opportunities and once we have taken a decision we should act immediately on it and follow through on our decisions swiftly.

7. They gain Success through failure and practice. Through months of trial and error, eagles acquire basic skills such as lighting on perches or stooping on prey. The mother eagle may roughly handle the young one, allow it to drop from the nest from ninety feet high and then swoop down under him, wings spread to break the fall and repeating the process. Life may give us a lot of bumps and tumbles. We may experience a lot of failure in the process but failure can be Providence's way of teaching us how to fly.

8. They seek Freedom and manifest their glory. The picture of an eagle as it hovers majestically in flight with outstretched wings exudes a sense of complete Freedom and majesty. We must learn to fly above our self-limiting actions and thoughts and live according to our own high standards unhampered by negative thoughts or expectations of others. By being free to manifest our true essence and celebrate our successes in life we will be living in freedom and joy.

9. They learn from Role models. Communal gatherings of eagles offer many advantages to younger inexperienced eagles to watch their elders and learn how food is caught. We can likewise look for role models and learn from them the laws of success.

10. Actions not words. The golden eagle is mainly a silent bird. It usually leaves its nest in silence and does not fly around and scream. In life we have to focus more on our actions than our words. Unless we walk our talk we are bound to loose credibility and respect.

Learn the lessons from the eagle and spread your wings to fly high.

Double Vision by Pat Barker

Double Vision by Pat Barker is a novel that defies description. Within its pages there is war, crime, murder, rape, love, hate, sex, artistry, creativity, duplicity, anger, tenderness, inspiration: a dictionary might have enough words to list its subtleties. What it has aplenty is feeling and emotion, an ability to convey its characters' innermost thoughts in an almost tactile manner, as if sculpting them for a hand to explore their surface. At times, Pat Barker’s characters surprise even themselves.

At the heart of the book is a series of relationships between four individuals – Justine, Ben, Kate and Stephen. The two men used to work together as a team. They have covered wars and conflict throughout the world. Stephen was the writer, Ben the photographer, who would always insist on getting that one last shot, the one that the eyeless onlooker would miss, the one whose poetry would convey the true horror, the one whose horror, perhaps, might stir conscience. But one day, an Afghanistan, he pursued his perfectionist brief one shot too far and, over-exposed, another’s eagle eye picked him out.

The loss felt by Stephen will never be adequately described, especially by himself. His partner’s death puts him in limbo and he retires to write. Ben’s sculptor wife, Kate, is left both numb and destroyed by her loss, a loss which becomes everything and nothing. A commission to create a giant Christ for a prime site in a churchyard is both pressing and unexpectedly therapeutic. She wants him naked. He must be clad. But then an accident damages her arms and she must seek help from a gardener, Peter, who is clearly much more than a pruner of roses. Exactly what Peter might be adds a sense of tangible mystery to parts of the book, but these serve only to highlight the fact that he is perhaps the only one of the characters with a recorded and therefore accessible past.

Justine is the vicar’s daughter. At nineteen she was ready to go to university, but illness disrupted her plans. Being ditched by a boyfriend did not help. And so academe was deferred by an enforced gap year. She ‘does’ for Stephen’s brother and his wife, specialising in caring for a difficult, demanding child. When Stephen lodges with the family, but in a separate dwelling a hundred yards from the house, he and Justine meet. He is old enough to be her father. So what? Their relationship develops through the book, their frequent sexual encounters both rich and surprising. Pat Barker’s ability to tease out emotional reaction, to crystallise it but at the same time to keep it fluid makes the story of Stephen and Justine exciting, exhilarating, contradictory, impossible and accepted in one. Whatever people’s ages, whatever their motives, whatever the consequences, either real or imagined, people still need love, can sense its promise, can invite it, even when they know it could hurt, humiliate, destroy.

Double Vision is thus a complex story of how a group of friends and acquaintances interact with history, reality, their hopes and fears in a small community in the north-east of England. There is a strong sense of place, a keen eye for detail in a rural landscape that is at least partly hostile. Not that other landscapes are not hostile. Memories of war and its consequences haunt some of the characters. Failed relationships taunt others. Unrealised dreams snag away at the fraying edges of what might have been. Death turns lives upside down, lives that go on to new ecstasies of joy, creativity or even plunder.

At the end of the book you know these people intimately and intuitively. But your knowledge and understanding of people is like a photograph. It is valid only for the instant in which it was taken. As memory, it solidifies an ever changing reality into an illusion of permanence, like a sculpture captures a moment of movement, a moment that never happened. Life goes on. This is a beautiful book.

Michael, a missionary priest, has just killed Munyasya. It was an accident, but Mulonzya, a politician, exploits the tragedy for his own ends. Boniface, a church worker, has just lost his child. He did not make it to the hospital in time, possibly because Michael went to the Mission to retrieve a letter from Janet, a teacher, and the priest’s neighbour. It is Munyasya who has the last laugh, however.
