In this installment of our guide to organizational management we look at managerial decision making...
Effective managers are tasked with making decisions ranging from large to small on a daily basis. An effective organization employs managers who are problem-solvers and who can make decisions constantly.
It is critical to first prioritize issues and problems based on the issues potential effect on the organization. Those that stand to have the greatest impact should be dealt with first, and all problems need to be addressed in a systematic way prior to a decision being made.
Because a first impression is just that, and does not necessarily reflect the entire situation, a manager must avoid jumping to conclusions. Collecting information from more than one source to avoid bias, and completely assessing all pertinent (and verifiable) information prior to rendering a decision is strongly recommended.
Collecting information in order to obtain a complete understanding of the issue is only the first step, however. Once the information is available, then it is wise to brainstorm different solutions and possible options in order to get more than one perspective. Such options can start out as wide-ranging, and then can be narrowed down to fit the scope of the problem.
Having identified a set of options and solutions, feedback and suggestions on them, along with alternatives, should be sought from consultations with others. For the most part, group decisions (particularly where the group contains people who the end decision will affect) are preferable to those made by individuals as a pool of knowledge, skills and experience can be drawn upon.
Tools, techniques and analysis methods (such as: Pareto Analysis; Paired Comparison Analysis; Grid Analysis; PMI; Six Thinking Hats; Starbursting; Decision Trees) can then be applied. These are not conclusive, but they do offer an objective and somewhat scientific approach to decision making. Theyre particularly useful when the decision-makers judgment is liable to be clouded by being too closely involved with the issue at hand.
Then comes the time to weigh the pros and cons of a decision. Which option or solution gives most to the organization whilst taking least from it? Few decisions will be as clear cut to hold no drawbacks. Negatives are acceptable though, so long as the positives sufficiently outweigh them.

The Ford Escort Over The Years
The Ford escort over the years, especially in North America, wore many different types of sheet-metal though all were aimed the compact market -- which prior to 1981 Ford had for all intents and purposes ignored. Beginning in that model year, however Ford introduced what it called "the world car" for the benefit of its customers in North America.
By and large, the compact Ford was successful right out of the gate and through the end of its life at the close of the 2003 model year, when it was supplanted by the new Focus. Originally created off the platform of a European model of the same name, it showed up in Ford showrooms sporting new sheetmetal and U. S. Technologies for its 1981 introduction.
Historically, the Escort was the first front-wheel-drive model offered by the Dearborn manufacturer, replacing the poorly-conceived and executed rear-wheel-drive Pinto, which suffered from several controversies at the time. By its second year, the Escort had become the best-selling vehicle in the United States and remained so for much of the eighties.
There were three different generations of Ford Escort sold in the North American market, with each one being an improvement over the other. Different body styles and options packages combined with a wide variety of four-cylinder engines and various transmissions over the years. There was even a small 52 horsepower diesel at one end and a turbocharged dynamo that could spool up to produce 120 horsepower at the other.
Over the course of the third and last generation, which lasted from 1997 through the end of 2002, engineers at Ford had managed to demonstrate a real facility with the design and manufacture of compact vehicles, managing to squeeze increasingly good performance and reliability from a variety of four-cylinder engines while also giving customers nice styling, especially for the relative low prices the Escort sold at.
Over the two-plus decades of the car's life, the Escort appeared in a variety of body styles. There was a hatchback sporting what Ford called "three doors, " and a station wagon model along with a couple of different performance sport coupes that first appeared on the scene back in 1998. The designers also kept up the car's appearance, freshening and redesigning it over the years.
Over its life, the Ford Escort played a vital part in keeping the car's Dearborn-based automaker alive and well. Keeping it in showrooms allowed the company to learn how to manufacture compact vehicles while simultaneously selling a great many of them to many a customer. This had the happy effect of keeping the Blue Oval on the minds of many consumers and for that reason alone, the Escort must be considered a success.

Have you ever owned a Ford Pinto?
Desribe it and tell me how you enjoyed it. Did you have to go back to the dealer to when they were recalled for the unsafe gas tank design?
yes , i had a 71 hatchback..with a 2000cc motor and a 4 speed..i loved that car it was very fast it could smoke the tires all the way through 2ND gear.. i won a couple of auto cross races with it and still have the trophies....
in normal driving it got 30+ mpg..
the recall was a joke.. yes i took it in and they put two rubber covers over the bolts Ralph Nader had made such a big deal of... the repair took less than a minute..
i would probably still have it if i drunk in a Toyota had not hit and totaled it
i also had a pinto pro gas car and a pinto funny car..
but those cars had very little in common with a real pinto
how did they look? well the funny car won 1st in the Oakland roadster show in the early 80's
Mickey Rourke’s comeback rolls on with ‘Iron Man 2’ - Fri, 07 May 2010 PST
With the muscular physique of a lifelong athlete and a face battered by boxing, Mickey Rourke looks almost as intimidating in person as he does in “Iron Man 2,” where he plays a villainous loner determined to destroy the hero with deadly electrically charged whips. But when the 53-year-old actor walks into a suite at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles to talk about the film, he brings a ...
