Is there an app for that?
That question may soon be asked of GM when it comes to its Voltec technology, the lithium-ion battery system powering the soon to be released Chevrolet Volt sedan. GM has made it plain that the Volt will not be the only product utilizing its latest electric technology, with several models developed to do just that.
Cadillac Canceled
At one point, GM appeared to be committed to building the Cadillac Converj, a stylish coupe based on Voltec. That won't happen and probably for two reasons: the Converj would have competed with the CTS coupe and GM appears ready to roll out a hybrid replacement for its larger STS and DTS sedans.
Cadillac will get a Voltec model, but not just yet.
So, where will Voltec appear? Opel and Buick (China) are two additional areas where the technology will roll out. But as auto trends change, you may see Voltec appear as follows:
GMC -- A Voltec crossover would fit in nicely with the brand, which is simply a shadow of Chevrolet trucks. By offering a Voltec crossover, GM would give people yet another reason to visit their Buick-GMC dealership which have suffered tremendously since GM axed Pontiac.
Buick -- Buick of China will get a badged version of the Opel Ampera, itself the European version of the Chevy Volt. But don't think for a moment that Buick North America will miss or have to rely on GMC to supply the vehicle. Buick is in need of an image builder which means that the Cadillac Converj could be restyled to become the Buick Riviera, one of the most renowned models in Buick lore.
Cadillac -- Figure in 2015 or later, Cadillac will finally see Voltec technology. The delay makes sense for two reasons: the brand needs fresh product to replace current models and by the time Voltec shows up, the major kinks will have been worked out. Chevrolet can afford to take a hit if problems arise with the Volt, while Cadillac cannot sustain such a blow. By then, GM may revisit the Cadillac Converj.
Elsewhere -- The remaining GM brands, Daewoo and Holden, are likely to see Voltec technology too, even if made available in limited numbers. GM might produce these vehicles alongside the Volt in Michigan and ship limited quantities to South Korea and Australia respectively. Then again, if Voltec takes off, global assembly seems possible.
Stay Tuned
No matter how you slice it, Voltec is big for GM. The automaker will be paying close attention to how the Chevy Volt is received and adjust their plans accordingly.

Gm Mulls a Compact Sedan for Buick
One of the brightest lights in the GM portfolio is Buick, a brand that once served the senior set really well. In truth, it still does.
Yet, beyond all of that Buick has been making a name for itself, with twice as many Buicks sold in China as there are in the US. The US fleet has been scaled back over the years, with only the full sized Lucerne sedan, mid-sized LaCrosse sedan, and the Enclave crossover in its line up. Still, the brand continually ranks well in consumer satisfaction surveys year after year.
A Limited Number Of Models
As I learned when I attended the NAIAS in Detroit earlier this year, GM is content to have its many brands sell just 3 or 4 vehicles instead of the 6 or 7 they had offered in the past. Long guilty of badge engineering — the practice of reselling virtually the same car as a Pontiac, Chevrolet or Saturn, GM is gradually moving away from this practice. Besides, in most areas of the country, Buicks are sold alongside of Pontiacs and GMC vehicles.
Enter The Excelle
A new compact sedan will be debuting in the Chinese market next year, the Excelle, a car that may find its way to the North American marketplace. Roughly the size of a Toyota Corolla, the Excelle will be rear wheel drive and be based on the company’s Alpha architecture, currently under development in Germany.
Although many of the automotive bloggers are trying their hardest to guess what the Excelle will be like (suggesting it is a rebadged Suzuki, for one), the car being planned will actually be quite different.
Responding To $4 Gallon Gasoline & CAFE
GM has stated that they want to build smaller, more luxurious cars which would help the company meet stringent CAFE requirements that will take place in 2020.
With gasoline expected to rise to as much as $4 per gallon later this year, a compact Buick will arrive a bit late, but when it does show up it could provide welcome relief to car dealers and buyers alike.

1985 Buick Le Sabre 307 V8, rear axle ratio?
I was wondering if there is any way to tell what axle ratio my car has. It's a 1985 Buick Le Sabre with a 307 V8 and 200 r4 Automatic overdrive. I'm not seeing any tag attached to the rear differential, is there a stamp somewhere to tell me what the ratio might be? I don't have the original window sales sticker. Someone told me the sticker under the trunk lid has the list of options, but how would I decode it?
Also, are most differentials of this era interchangeable, between Buick-Chevy-Olds-Pontiac-Cadillac-GMC trucks? If I have I very slow ratio (say 2.41 which was very common) I want to swap to a 3.08 or higher.
Without pulling the cover, all you can do is estimate the gear ratio. Jack bot rear tires off the ground and put the vehicle in neutral. Put a mark on the tire and make one turn of the wheel. How many times does the driveshaft turn?
If you really want to know, pop off the diff cover. Most ring gears have the ratio stamped into it. If not, a little simple math will tell you. Number of ring gear teeth divided by number of pinion gear teeth = final drive ratio.
The sister cars to your Buick (Chevy Caprice, Pontiac Bonneville, Olds 88/98, etc.) all interchange. They are all built on the same chassis.
If I was going to take a guess, your car likely has a 2.73 gear in it.
Buick to scrap trim levels:
Buick will eliminate its and#8220;CX,and#8221; and#8220;CXLand#8221; and and#8220;CXSand#8221; trim levels in the 2012 model year, opting for a few and#8220;stair-stepand#8221; packages instead, one of the brand's top marketers said today.
