Premature newborn being kept in hospital because of high temp and jaundice?
My cousin just had a baby boy last week, prematurely. She was only 34 weeks. They now are keeping the child because of a high temp and jaundice? Is this normal and do you think he will be alright?
Yes, I think the little guy will be okay. At 34 weeks, he has a REALLY good chance of survival outside the womb since his lungs are fully developed and all of his organs were already working on their own. Jaundice is easy to take care of, they will put him under special lights called Billie Lights that simulate sunshine and give him some extra beta-carotene to take care of the jaundice. As for the temperature, the hospital will be able to figure out what's causing it and will get it back down where it needs to be. You have nothing to worry about. He's going to be just fine.
