We have been hearing more and more about a speed camera detector in the last few years and we might hear even more about the device with the time to come. The reason for the attention is the growing number of law enforcement radars on our streets. A speed camera detector can supposedly save you loads of money in avoiding speeding ticket fines; however the question that remains to be answered is how does it really work and does it work at all?
There are different ways of how the police and other law enforcement agencies measure the speed of your vehicle. They use stationary or mobile devices, which could either use microwaves or infrared light to scan the area ahead or, in some cases, behind of them. Another equipment that is used consist of multiple cameras at different locations, which is centrally operated and can measure your speed based on a license plate recognition system between points A and B. Hence, there also are different types of speed camera detection devices, which however might not protect you from the multiple camera system. This also applies to the method used by some police officers, when they clock your speed between point A and point B using the similar method as multiple camera system.
So, how do those radars and laser guns work? For instance, when a police officer chooses to scan for speeding vehicles, he can use any of the above devices if available to him/her. Laser guns are usually used on stationary stand or hand-held, but almost never in a moving vehicle. The "gun" sends out a column of pulsed infrared light, which travels towards your vehicle and once it reaches it, a portion of it is reflected back by your vehicle. Once this signal is sent more than twice, the reading of the difference between your positions is calculated by the internal microprocessor and your speed is determined.
The similar principle is used by regular radars, which send out pulsed microwave frequencies instead of infrared light beam. The so-called Doppler effect (change in frequencies) is then measured. Based on that measurement your speed is calculated.
Each of those devices has to send out some signal, be it in the form of microwave frequencies or infrared light. Now, depending on the model, each speed camera detector is sensitive either to certain frequencies or to infrared light particles or all of them. Once it receives frequencies of certain parameters it reacts by setting the alarm off that warns the driver of a possible threat.
The main frequencies used in the US are X, K, Ka, and IR bands, where the first three are microwave frequencies used by regular radars and IR stands for infrared light frequencies used by laser guns. There is also Ku bandwidth, which is supposed to be used only in Europe, but I am suspicious that it is used in the US as well, although I cannot prove it. S band is supposedly not used anymore. Each of those frequencies has certain parameters, which are programmed to a speed camera detector by its manufacturer.
Speed camera detectors work, there really is no question about that. However, not all units that are sold today provide you with the same quality protection. Ideally, your speed camera detector shall cover all those above-mentioned bandwidths so you are not caught off guard.

is it legal to use a radar/laser detector in my car?
Most countries allow it, and most states also allow it, but there is one important thing to remember, the police's laser/radar gun will detect you before your dector will get them, I have bought many in the past 10 years and it only warns you that there is a police around, but doesn't stop you from going too fast thru a radar trap.
