LCD and TFT don't really compare directly. TFT is a type of LCD.
Several years ago, it was important to ask whether an LCD was TFT or not, but now TFT is the base for all computer LCD monitors.
To compare the quality of an LCD monitor's TFT technology, it is necessary to discover which TFT technology the LCD is using. There are 3 basic types of TFT technology found in today's LCD monitors:
TN (Twisted Nematic): By far the most common type of LCD used to in highly affordable LCD monitors, TN panels usually offer the fastest pixel response time, but at the cost of some color depth (6-bit). TN LCDs generally offer poorer viewing at off-angles, and color quality is quickly lost as the viewer moves off-center. The Acer v193b is based on this TFT technology, and it is a good monitor for the price.
S-IPS (Super In-Plan Switching): S-IPS based LCDs are considered the best overall TFT. They offer great color reproduction (8-bit) and very wide viewing angles, although at extreme angles the blacks and grays shift toward purple. These types of TFTs are generally found only in 'professional quality' monitors.
S-PVA (Super Patterned-ITO Vertical Alignment): S-PVA panels also have 8-bit color depth, and offer viewing angles and color reproduction superior to TN technology. These types of TFT monitors offer superior contrasts (blacks and grays) to both TN and S-IPS. These types of TFTs are generally found in "high-end, but not professional," LCDs
Sadly, it takes considerable effort to discover which TFT technology is used in any given LCD monitor, as this information is not generally provided in sales literature or product specifications on the box.
