Being 53 years of age, and the owner of a personal defense and surveillance company, I look back and remember that the world was a much different place to live in when I was a kid...I can remember as a child coming home from school and grabbing the mail from the mailbox (one of my chores) and bringing in the trash cans (another one of my chores) and proceeding to just walk right into my house. The door was always unlocked and the only time it required a key was when we went away for vacation or on any extended trips. The neighbors were always around and no one gave it another thought. That's just how it was back then. Sure, there was crime back then; but not on our block or in our neighborhood. A lot has changed since then.
When I was in my teens I can remember coming home from school one day to find out our house had been robbed. By this age the doors were always locked when no one was home; but they broke a basement window and climbed through. The police said it was kids. Boy was that a scary and uneasy feeling. It was only minor stuff; but someone had been in my stuff when I was out and that was an eerie feeling. We were very upset and, understandably, paranoid for quite a while afterwards.
After this incident my dad had an alarm installed in our house for protection; and ever since then every house I have owned has had an alarm system. Now if you know me, you know I don't do anything halfway...In fact you could say I am a bit over the top. My present home security system has 3 motion sensors throughout the floorplan. All the doors and windows (including the basement) are hardwired with backups in case anyone tries to bypass them on a break in. There are 4 sirens;2 inside and 2 outside. The system can be fully armed while we go about our business inside by bypassing certain motion detectors. And it all feeds into a central station monitoring company.
Now the best part... I recently added a 16 channel multi cam wireless DVR system to safeguard the outside property...It runs continuous video and I can watch it over my PC as well. Since there are so many cams, I can keep an eye on the pool, the dogs (we have 2), all our cars, all 4 sides of the exterior of the house and all of the upstairs and downstairs inside the house. Add to that the basement and the garages and you have not only a state of the art surveillance system, but a birds eye view of everything that could go wrong before it gets out of hand. These systems have become very affordable and I would strongly recommend taking a good look at your home and seeing if you are satisfied with your current system as far as protecting both you and your family.
