All around our economy, we find evidence of successful joint ventures. Look in the newspaper. Watch it on the news. Find it on billboards and advertisements. The most popular JV's have exerted a large influence on our society, our economy, as well as technological developments.
In America, and in most advanced countries in the world where the government has great influence and regulation over mergers and acquisitions, companies find that joint ventures are a great way to join forces without the strict government oversight. Below are some of the examples of joint ventures and the results you see almost every day.
Sony and Ericsson's Joint Venture
Japanese electronics giant, Sony, has been a leading manufacturer of consumer electronics, including audio, video, and communications, for decades. Along with their established manufacturing pervasiveness, Sony has had a global marketing dominance in all their products, including motion pictures and music recordings. With all their marketing expertise, they still needed an innovative technology expert to develop a marketing relationship.
Enter the Swedish technology expert, Ericsson. Ericsson specialized in developing innovative telecommunications equipment for mobile networks. In 2001, Sony and Ericsson teamed up in a 50-50 joint venture now known worldwide as Sony Ericsson to develop and establish their innovative brand as the most attractive and dominant in the mobile handset industry. Their successful joint venture has resulted in the development, production, and marketing of some of the best handheld mobile phones available today.
Verizon and Vodafone's JV Endeavors
And continuing with the mobile communications industry, who hasn?t seen the nice guy asking, ?can you hear me now?? for Verizon Wireless? Verizon Communications was a leading deliverer of broadband and other wireless communications products. In 2000, they wanted to jump into the mobile wireless network provider industry and found a partner with European wireless behemoth, Vodafone.
Vodafone was the world?s leading international mobile communications group, providing wireless service to hundreds of millions of customers. They were able to tap into the North American market with a strategic joint venture with Verizon Communications. By combining Verizon?s cellular, PCS, and paging assets with Vodafone?s wireless communications technology and marketing, they have now become the nation?s ?most reliable? and largest wireless network.
Joint Venture Between Mazda and Ford
Ford Motor Company had an available parts casting center located in Flat Rock, Michigan. Mazda saw an opportunity to purchase and rebuild the plant to begin producing a line of automobiles. After Mazda had success with their MX-6 models and producing Ford?s own Probe model, Ford teamed up with Mazda to form a joint venture company, AutoAlliance International in 1992. Since then, they have produced some of the leading automobile models, including the Ford Cougar line, Ford Mustang, and the Mazda 6.
These are just a few examples of the most visible and popular joint ventures in North America and the world. Though these joint ventures are large in scale jumping into international business and marketing, even small business owners can learn from them. Combining capital, technology, and marketing savvy are just a few of the ways business owners and entrepreneurs can create joint ventures. Using creativity and experience in business, there is virtually no limit in how two or more companies can combine to form a joint venture.

Mustang Industry: Cash for Clunkers, How will it effect your business?
There is a lot of talk about the new cash for clunkers legislation that aims to take older vehicles off the road. Many aftermarket parts suppliers, independent repair, and body shops have been wondering how this will effect their business. In our industry the Mustang & Classic Ford restoration/performance market, reports suggest that there should be little change and there is even potential for growth. A report by BB&T suggests that most people that will be taking advantage of the program will be lower income drivers, market research shows that this demographic does not spend a significant amount on none-essential automotive products. Since most Mustangs from 1979-2004 still demand a higher resale value on the open market, most drivers will opt to sell vehicles in place of trading them in. Another factor on the number of vehicles that would be scrapped include buyers qualifying for new car financing, with credit already hard to obtain, low income drivers will have a hard time finding an approval for a new car loan. Even if a consumer went from 18 mpg to 30 mpg the savings in fuel would be less than $50 a month. Many people driving 15-20 year old cars are not going purchase $30,000 hybrids, using only the rebate as a down payment a $28,900 Ford Escape Hybrid for five years will cost nearly $575 a month at 7% interest. Here in California most of the Cash Ford Clunkers rebate will be eaten up by newly passed sales tax hikes and higher registration fees that in some parts of the state can add almost 13% to the purchase price of a new car.
If you are still concerned that Cash Ford Clunkers programs could effect your business, there are several ways you can diversify your product offering to appeal to a broader market. If you only offer classic parts perhaps expand into late model, if you specialize in Fox Bodies expand into other 70’s-90’s pony cars such as the Camaro. The only vehicles we may see diminished in our industry are later model Mustangs, however, the lower value cars in this segment such as the 2.3 four cylinder Mustang’s of the 80’s and 90’s may not offer enough of a fuel savings to justify the car payment. These programs will not be removing large SUV’s off the road, and will more then likely be taken advantage of by people that were in the market for a new car anyways.
Where the aftermarket may see a major benefit is with as many as 3,000 more dealerships closing, maintenance parts will need to be supplied by aftermarket shops. If you happen to be in a region where a dealership is closing you may want to start aggressively promoting your company as a alternative parts, repair, and maintenance facility. The aftermarket may benefit from this bill by receiving good running parts cars that would be sent to dismantlers, however, nether of the bills have a clear outline of what would happen to the “clunker” once it is turned it. With out clear definitions on this aspect of the legislation the environmental gains could be limited or even detrimental if vehicles are not properly dismantled and disposed of, or if they simply end up being exported to Mexico and Central America the overall “carbon emissions” will only increase world wide.

Did the Mercury Cougar GT-E option come with a 427 or 428 Cobra-Jet ?
A friend of mine recently found one ,that he bought .
He claims that it originally had a 427 Sideoiler . I knew they put Cobra-Jets in Mustangs and Fairlanes in 196970 , but I thought all you could get was a 390 GT, in 1968 .
Actually both !
Early production Cougar GT-E's were vin stamped with a W code for the engine , which meant they received the legendary 427 Sideoiler (detuned for 1968 ) single 4V carb and hydraulic camshaft producing an underrated HP of 390 .
Later production after April 1st , the 427 was shelfed due mostly to manufacturing costs , the 428 Cobra-Jet was introduced . $755 vs $300 were pretty close #'s to actual cost, back then.
BTW They produced 357 427 powered Cougars and only about 37 428 Ram Air Cobra-Jet GT-E's .
Wahlgren returns to coaching, takes job at Buhler
Denny Wahlgren's three-year hiatus from coaching will come to an end this fall. Wahlgren, the longtime high school boys basketball coach at Salina South and Salina Central, has been named head coach of the Buhler High School boys program.
