The tablet PC or MID (mobile internet device) has taken the consumer electronics
The tablet PC or MID (mobile internet device) has taken the consumer electronics market by storm over the past year, and looks certain to become a fixture in millions more pockets in 2011 and beyond. Although the iPad still holds the largest market share, consumers are starting to see a wide range of choices - some of them at very affordable prices - as a whole slew of other manufacturers jump on the tablet bandwagon. With its history of competing head-on with the other giants in the information technology market, it should come as no great surprise that Google has launched its own line of tablet PCs, dubbed the GPad.
The GPad series uses Google's own Android operating system, which has also been adopted by many other MID brands. With the regular upgrades of Android, the GPad range is becoming ever more capable of performing a dazzling array of functions. Users can also download apps from the Android Market site to further increase the capabilities of most of the GPad models.
Just like its rivals, the GPad is slim, lightweight and easy to slip into a pocket or backpack. All models have large, bright touchscreens and easy-to-use, intuitive menus and icons. Even though they are very inexpensive compared with other branded tablets, they don't compromise on styling, features or performance.
The popular Gpad G08, for example, features an 8-inch TFT LCD display and runs on Android 2.1. The processor is a Telechips 8902 ARM 11 that runs at 800Mhz. There's 256MB of DDR2 RAM and 4GB of onboard storage, which you can expand to 32GB by adding a Micro SD card. Built-in Wifi allows you to get online easily, but you can also plug in a separate USB modem for 3G connectivity if you're not close to a hotspot. You also have the option to add an external GPS device to transform your GPad into a navigating tool. The G08 supports Adobe Flash so you can play 3D games, read ebooks and magazines, and perform many other tasks. It can also handle a large variety of audio, video and image files, so you'll never be at a loss for entertainment. The gravity sensor allows you to view the screen in portrait or landscape mode.
For business people, the ability to use spreadsheets, document and PowerPoint files and other Office functions makes the Gpad G08 an essential business tool that can in many cases take the place of a laptop outside of the office. If you're stuck at the airport waiting for a delayed flight, for example, you'll appreciate having a tablet PC that lets you catch up on work and communicate with clients and colleagues, as well as providing hours of fun.
One thing this model doesn't have is a camera, so you can't use it to take photos or videos, or for video calls on Skype. If you do want a camera, you might prefer the GPad G12, which has much the same features as the G08, but with the addition of a 1.3 megapixel camera. This model comes with a 7 inch screen and a stylish aluminum shell. Or there's the 7 inch Gpad G10, which also has a camera, and comes either with or without wifi connectivity.
If you value a big display, take a look at the 10 inch GPad, which does support wifi but doesn't have a camera. This is an excellent device for people who love to watch movies on the go, however, or who frequently use a MID to work on documents and spreadsheets. But if you like the sound of a top-of-the-range GPad that costs a lot less than its big-brand rivals, the 9.7 inch model with a capacitive screen, and handwriting and voice recognition, could be right up your street. This high-spec MID runs on Android 2.2 and is more powerful than the other GPads thanks to its Freescale Core-A8 800MHZ processor and 512MB of RAM. The 8GB hard disk can be expanded to 32GB, and the 2.0 megapixel camera gives you high-quality photos and videos.
