I am learning how to drive, and I am looking to buy a pre-owned car. I don't know much about cars, so I'm looking for some advice in choosing a car. I'm a student so my budget is limited, I'd like to keep cost as low as possible. What I am looking for in a car is something with character, I don't really like the Civic, Accords, or other really generic sedan-type cars. Some of the cars that I've been looking into are Jeep Wrangler, Neon, Eclipse, and Miata. I'm trying to stay away from anything that would cause my already high insurance from drasticlly increasing. So far I am leaning towards a 2003 Jeep Wrangler, but I'm a little concerned about gas mileage and whether it is a good car to learn to drive in.
The Wrangler is going to be expensive on insurance because it is 4wheel drive. It will also only get about 20mpg on the highway, so gasoline will be a burden.
The Miata is a sports car, so it too will cost a lot to insure.
The Neon will probably be the cheapest as far as insurance goes, but they do depreciate quickly, so if you're going to drive it for a few years you should be ok.
I'm not sure how old you are, but once you reach 21 and have a clean record, your insurance should take a noticable drop. It'll take a more noticable drop once you reach 25. That's when you can get your Miata.
Also, many insurance companies won't insure you for a sports car, such as a Corvette, unless you are BUYING your house.
It's always wise to check with your insurance agent about a particular car you may be interested. When I was 18 (many many moons ago), I made the mistake and let the car salesman (whom I considered a friend) price the insurance for me because he said it was part of the customer service he offered. He told me "$410". I assumed it was for at least half a year. So I bought the car. The insurance turned out to be $410 down, then $160 per month! $2330 per year for a new car???? I learned my lesson.
