It is important to find a supplier you trust for your equipment and supplies. Whether you are making soy, gel, paraffin, or any other type candle, you need a dependable source. Scented candle making presents some other concerns you may not be aware of.

Not all fragrance oils are suitable for your particular application. Although most will work in all kinds of candles, some may not have been tested for gel applications. In gel candles, it is imperative to use fragrance oil that is non-polar and has a flash point of at least 170 degrees Fahrenheit. Failure to maintain this standard may result in a gel candle that will explode!

The melt pool, that liquid area around the base of the flame, is a typical 275 degrees Fahrenheit in a gel candle. An ignition of that pool will only happen if the temperature reaches 440 degrees Fahrenheit. Because fragrance oil has a lower flashpoint than gel, it can significantly lower the flash point of the gel.

Polar fragrances can cause deterioration of the gel's strength and pull the flash point down to a critically low point. Polar fragrances do not mix well with the gel, and the resulting pockets that may be formed won't be visible to the naked eye. If a pocket is formed around the wick, a flare of the candle will take place when the candle burns down to that spot.

One way to control the amount of degradation of gel from the fragrance oil is by limiting how much fragrance is used. Penreco, the maker of gel, recommends the following amounts of fragrance oil:

* Low density - 1/2 ounce per pound of gel

* Medium density - 3/4 ounce per pound

* High density - 1 ounce per pound

Polarity is not an issue with paraffin and soy candles because the wax does not burn as hot as gel. Fragrance oils will crystallize on certain occasions, usually due to extreme heat or cold. If you see solids floating in the mixture, this is what has happened. Vanilla and chocolate components in the fragrance make it susceptible to crystallization. There are two ways to fix this situation.

The simplest method is to pour the oil into a heat tempered bottle that has a cap. Leave the cap off and place in the microwave for five seconds. Take it out, replace the cap, and shake the mixture. It may take several times of zapping and shaking to get the crystals to dissolve.

The other way is to put the bottle in hot water, tumble it, take it out, and shake it. This works as well as the microwave, but it is slower. Some candle makers are more comfortable with this method than using the microwave.

Scented candle making is a great way to enhance your candles. Be sure your supplier is giving you the safest and best quality materials you can get.

Wear Polarized Shades While Fishing to Protect Your Eyes

Despite what you might hear about the weather in Northern Ohio we do have a lot of bright, sunny fishing days on Lake Erie.
That's why I always encourage my customers to bring dark, polarized sunglasses with them on their charter. Without them, a fisherman likely will end the day with a gigantic headache caused by squinting all day.
According to eye doctors, polarized lenses contain filters that reduce glare from reflected light.
Thanks to the invasion of zebra mussels a decade ago the lake's water generally is pretty clear most of the time. So trust me when I say that the glare can be pretty intense. So don't forget the sunscreen either.
Doctors say non-polarized sunglasses only reduce the amount of light entering the eye without solving glare problems.
Eliminating surface glare allows an angler to see down in the water, even fish you may be attempting to hook.
That's a neat site when you are bringing in a big fish. Flyfishermen also love polarized sunglasses because they allow the anglers to see trout coming to their fly.
But don't get the wrong idea. Polarized glasses do not give the user Superman's X-ray-vision powers: Fish and structure will remain unseen in cloudy water no
matter what type of glasses you wear.

Fisherman who complain of eye fatigue and
headaches after a long day in the bright sun are most likely feeling the effects of excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light.
The same UV rays that cause sunburn can also inflict damage on the eye. High-quality, polarized optics offer more than mere respite for squinting eyes; they also provide protection from invisible hazards by blocking UV light.
Because the reflected light can be extremely bright I recommend having at least two different pair of polarized sunglasses, one tinted a dark shade and the other tinted lighter for those cloudy-bright days.
The wrap-around style is perfect for fishing because it give protection for the entire field of vision. Out there on the lake, reflected light can hit you from all directions.
How much you pay for your sunglasses is up to the individual. I've purchased polarized shades at Walmart for around $12 and was satisified. But the last few years I have been getting my sunglasses at West Marine.
Their brands are especially made for boating so the lenses and frames are made to get tossed around. A good pair will cost around $40, but you can buy them on sale and save.

Can only Tetrahedron and Linear shaped molecules be non-polar?

Can only Tetrahedron and Linear shaped molecules be non-polar?

I'm probably very confused about the concept of atom symmetry so if anyone could explain it that would be great. Still don't understand dipoles cancelling each other out.

You're doing just fine.. but there are more examples of symmetries that can lead to non-polar molecules. Trigonal planar molecules come to mind (e.g. BF3 or CO3^2-). Perfectly octahedral molecules will also be non-polar, as will square-planar molecules. It's all about the individual bond dipoles cancelling each other so that you can't point to a negative or positive end of a molecule. The symmetry will result in cancellations, and there are several different symmetry elements that can mean such cancellation.
