Many people buy a new PC because it has become slow, or to update to a newer operating system for ease of use, or maybe the new facilities offered by a newer operating system. The old computer still works, it is just that it has slowed down or inadequate for some of the newer processor intensive tasks that users commonly carry out these days, such as video making, HD DVD movie playing, and processing high quality digital camera images.
In fact many people would really like to feel that they are not wasting the remaining life of their old system, and do wonder what they could be using it for. In this article we will give you our list of the uses which really can usefully utilize these old computer systems at little or no cost.
It just takes a little time and effort to research these uses and get going on such projects.
1. The first and really most obviously useful thing to do with you old PC system is to use it as a server to hold back-ups of you most important files. You can do this by un-installing all the software programs which you originally installed on that machine, just keeping your personal files. If you had a large number of applications installed, which presumably you have already moved in to your new PC, your old PC will speed up. De-fragmenting the hard drive using suitable software will also help, as will running registry clean-up software such as the free version of CCleaner.
Older windows operating systems, however, can be quite difficult to set up as servers, which allow other home computers to access them, and write to other PCs, due to the less than completely logical application of security from PC code hackers and security scams. So, many people are successfully deleting the Windows operating system from these old PCs, with which they were bought, and installing Linux server operating system compilations. For example iBuntu gives away a version which is a cut-down Linux operating system for this purpose. It is also completely free of charge, as long as you do not require their support service. Most people who can follow instructions, will use their set up wizards which simplify the whole installation process, and complete the installation without difficulty.
Once installed you will be able to back up all your important files to this central location. There is a simple backup program in newer Windows operating systems. If you have an older operating system, you can use a free backup system such as the one provided on SourceForge.
If you have other old drives from other old PCs, and if you have a desktop type PC, you should be able to add one or possibly two of these to your server, by physically removing them and fixing them into a spare drive bay in the server.
2. The second suggestion is to buy a copy of Windows Home Server and use that instead of a cut-down Linux operating system, as in 1. above. It is not expensive at about $60 and will allow you to do all the above backup operations, but Windows home Server is set up really easily for those more used to Microsoft software, and it will also run on really slow PCs.
3. Number three is more of a specialist niche use for your old PC. Why not again, as before, remove all your old programs by un-installing them, and then convert your PC into a retro games arcade machine? Even a 5-year-old PC will be capable of running an emulator for games dating back to the early 1990's and those that remember some of the old classics will enjoy a nostalgic return to zapping invaders using an arcade emulator. One that is well-known, is free, and runs in Windows, is called MAME and it works great on the types of PCs which are commonly being thrown away.
4. Finally, you can use your old PC to run old software, and use old peripherals (scanners, digitizing pads, specialist printers etc.), that won't run on new operating systems, usually because the manufacturer has failed to support the new operating system by providing drivers. This can be far more economical than upgrading software, and/or buying replacement hardware peripheral equipment.
There it is then, we have given you 4 suggestions for revitalizing your old PC, to provide security for your valuable, and probably irreplaceable data (such as, digital images of your family), plus offering you ideas for additional features for all the family who can use the common family server, and fun in playing favourite old games.

If I upgrade to Vista on oem XP computer which has built in recovery will it lose the recovery function?
I have an Iqon PC (Irish company now gone bust) I bought a couple of years ago from Tesco.It has XP Home OS on it and a recovery function called PC Angel.If I upgrade to Vista will I lose the recovery function?When things go pear shaped the recovery tool is great,it justs formats everything and reinstalls itself.You have to then get the updates on everything but thats not too bad.
