Buying Medical Equipment

Buying medical equipment is one of the biggest and most important investments that a physician can make. After all, the health of his patients will depend in no small part on the reliability of the medical devices he’s using.

One of the most basic questions to start out with when talking about shopping for medical equipment is whether one should buy used or new medical equipment. Used and refurbished equipment is a popular choice among young physicians who are just starting up their first medical practice and have to be especially careful with their funds. If you shop around and take the time to do your research you can find good, affordable deals without sacrificing on quality.

A good place to look in when buying either used or new equipment is online medical equipment marketplaces, like DOTmed.com and other similar sites. You’ll find auctions and listings from authorized vendors, manufacturers and private individuals. Buying from private individuals is not advised, however, since they won’t likely offer you a warranty or any other kind of repair service that usually comes with new and refurbished equipment. Keep in mind that even though you can save on refurbished medical equipment, that most used and refurbished equipment sellers won’t offer as good a warranty on devices as you’ll get with new equipment sellers.

New medical equipment comes with an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) warranty, which is a guarantee that the device you purchase will work without issue for the advertised amount of time, or else you’re entitled to free repairs or a full replacement. OEM warranties cover both hardware and software defects.

If you go for the new equipment route, the brand is the important thing to be aware of. Certain brands of medical equipment manufacturers specialize in certain medical devices. So depending on what device you’re on the market for, you should choose accordingly. To give an example, Philips makes the most popular defibrillator on the market (the Heart Start) that is easy to use. If you’re looking for a reliable, easy-to-use defibrillator, Philips might be worth looking into. If you want a small, portable defibrillator, Zolls is known for making high quality, portable defibrillators that are smaller and lighter than any others out there.

Does a 2002 Toyota Highlander require a chip key to start?

I have a 2002 Highlander that I bought new. I recall that the sales person said the key was specially equipped with a computer chip. My wife recently got a key made. The top is not as round or fat as our original keys - I'm not sure there is a chip inside. According to my documentation and what the dealer shows on the computer, the vehicle does have the engine immoblizer. But when I insert the key into the ignition, the car starts. Is this key a 'chip key'? Or do I have a broken immobilizer? I had my regular key in my pocket, but I was told that it had to be in close proximity to the iginition? Anyone have any ideas?

If you can get me the vin # of the vehicle I can run it and find out if it indeed has an engine immobilizer. If so on that vehicle, there is no dimple on the key or mark, just the head is fatter than a typical key. The key with the chip would have to be inserted in the ignition in order to work. Has there been a remote start installed on the vehicle? That is one possibility of the system being messed up.
