What is the peak power of Crown amplifier?
I have a crown XLS 802 amplifier, 500 RMS watts per channel at 8 ohms. is the peak wattage 1000 watts? and how many watts does the clip LED light up at? does the clip LED light up at peak power? sometimes the peak is not double the RMS, because you can't measure A.C. power the same way as D.C. I know, but as a way to measure I can't find anything, only RMS. thanks.
You really only need to know the RMS rating of the amp if you are trying to match it to speakers. The RMS rating of the amp should be the program power rating of the speakers. Good quality professional amps (like Crown) rarely specify a "peak" rating because audio pros don't need that information. If your speakers are rated for under 500 watts program power, you will be ok as long as the peak lights are not lighting often when you are playing the system loudly.
People get way to worried about this whole issue. The bottom line is that it is more dangerous to underpower your DJ or sound system speakers than to overpower them. A underpowered amp will distort sooner for a given volume level and distortion is what damages speakers. The peak lights should rarely light when you are running your system at loud levels. If they are lighting often, you will damage your speakers.
