After a motor vehicle crash, or a pedestrian injury, we expect first responders (police, firemen, EMTs) and emergency vehicles to arrive promptly and get to work. That's their job, and it's what they want to do. In order for them to do it, every driver on the road also has a job, and in 47 states, a legal obligation, to get out of the way of the crash site, for the protection of the victims and also the first responders. Be sure that you know all the types of emergency vehicles and first responders, so that you can give them the room they need to do their job safely.

Most drivers are familiar with law enforcement vehicles: local police and sheriffs and state police, with red and white blinking lights. Here are some other law enforcement and emergency vehicles that also get involved in roadway accidents:

  • State Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Department of Forestry, who are charged with law enforcement and public safety in state parks and other public lands
  • State and Federal Environmental Protection Agencies, who deal with toxic or hazardous spills and leaks.
  • State Department of Transportation, which has responsibility for inspecting commercial vehicles and some aspects of road construction sites.
  • Fire trucks, which often are summoned to vehicle crash sites
  • Ambulances, which can be part of the fire department, or private contractors
  • Command center vehicles. They can be a senior police or fire official's car, or a large motor home fitted out as a communication and command center.
  • Tow trucks. After an accident, tow trucks must get to the scene and work at the scene to remove the vehicles
  • Unmarked police vehicles that have flashing red or blue lights

Any of these vehicles, and usually more than one type, will be called to a crash site. As a driver, you should always be alert for the presence of an emergency vehicle. If you hear a siren either ahead of you or behind you, you should quickly pull over to the shoulder or the curb, to allow the vehicle room to pass. Emergency vehicles sometimes use only lights and not a siren. If you see lights ahead or in your rear view mirror, do the same: get over to the curb or shoulder. These practices apply whether the emergency vehicle is heading the same direction you are, or approaching from the opposite direction.

Remember that in an emergency, especially after a crash, time is critical to victims' survival. Your failure to pull over could delay the first responders getting to the victims in need of medical care. Think about how it would be if you were the person injured, and what you'd want drivers to do.

Keep your distance from an accident. If you're driving on a highway, move a lane or two away, as much as you can safely do. If you can't change lanes, slow down to 20mph below the posted speed limit. Do not slow down to gape at the scene; you're risking getting rear-ended. If you're driving on city streets and come on emergency vehicles with their lights flashing, take a detour.

After an accident, do not follow emergency vehicles. In most states it is illegal to follow within 500 feet of an ambulance, police car, or other emergency vehicle.

Bottom line: any vehicle-car, SUV, truck, or specialized vehicle--with red, blue, or amber lights that are flashing should be considered an emergency vehicle. Slow down, move over, and give the first responders the room they need to do their job.

If you or a loved one has been involved in a motor vehicle accident and has been seriously injured, and you believe you may have a legal claim, you should consult an experienced auto and motorcycle accident attorney as soon as possible, while evidence is still available and witnesses memories are fresh.

why do the sirens on police cars change? Does each emergency service have it's own siren?

fretman, i don't know what you're talking about, more detail please!

In the UK now legislation says vehicles have to have the (new) directional sirens. Such sounds of the new sirens in the UK are the Wail, Yelp and Piercer. The wail is the long and slow tone used to draw attention from distance, yelp for junctions and the Piercer is the fastest tone and most alertive.

All emergency vehicles will soon have the same sirens as the old ones are being replaced.
