VW CDC Hardware error. How to fix it? (Without taking to the dealer)?
I own a 2005 VW new Jetta. Last week when I was listening to a CD I switched to the FM radio which is a normal task that I've done without any issues in the past. But at that time I suddently got the following error message on the audio unit display: "CDC Hardware error". Since then the CD player of the Audio unit is not functioning at all (It freezez and reads: "Please wait.." then it reads: "CDC hardware error" again...the CD eject and insert, etc. don't work either). The Radio works with issues; every 2 minutes it gives the same error "CDC hardware error", then radio works ok for another 2 minutes. Is there anyway I could repair the unit without taking to the dealership? They charge outrageous fees for little issues and I obviously no longer have the warranty.
Extra details: The audio unit has a CD changer with 6 slots, MP3 playing capability (No ipod connection).
I hate to tell you this, but the dealership cannot do much for you either. In very limited cases, the VAG tester can repair radio issues, but most of the time all they can do for you is exchange the unit for another one.
You might be able to repair the radio locally; most of the units are from Panasonic and you can look in the telephone directory or perhaps the Panasonic website for a local authorized repair centre.
The fact is that you may be better off replacing the radio unit with a NON VW radio/cd unit for the same money or less (than a VW exchange unit). A good auto radio shop can sell you a unit that will mount into the existing double din hole and use an adapter harness so that the radio wiring doesn't have to be curt.
Finally, a used unit might be ok; just be sure to get the radio code for the unit; some dealerships charge for getting the code, even if you already have the unit "loose." Aftermarket units have either codes, removable face plates or no additional security features.
Hope this helps, a car nut.
