Can you use TFT technology for televisions?
I was comparing my cellphone screen, Samsung Access (TFT LCD screen), to my LCD TV (LG 37" 720p). I could clearly see the pixels on my TV, but when looking at my cell phone, I couldn't see any hard edges. Now, is it possible to use the technology used in my cellphone and make a larger display, say 37", out of it? If so, why arent manufacturers doing so? My cell has 320x240 pixels (2.25" screen) and my tv is only 1280x720 pixels (but in a 37" display). That means my tv has 12 times more pixels than my cell, yet is still 16.4 times larger than it. Theoretically, i should be able to fit more pixels in my tv. Are TFT LCD screens high resolution that LED or OLED displays?
TFT is a variant of liquid crystal display (LCD) which uses thin-film transistor (TFT) technology to improve image quality. All LCD-screens are based on TFT active matrix addressing.
In TFT screens, small LCDs have direct driven image elements. This is impractical for a large display with a large number of picture elements (pixels), since it would require millions of connections—top and bottom connections for each one of the three colors (red, green and blue) of every pixel.
A much clearer technology is on the horizon for large-screen television. OLED sets are being developed now which will once again revolutionize the TV industry. They are made up of Organic Light Emitting Diodes which produce their own individual light. The screens are about as thin as a sheet of paper, and the image is outstanding.
