As a technician, I have seen many critical issues but don't you think that at times you might encounter that tough day when no matter what you try, things would not work out for you? In this world of knowledgeable people where trained technicians from software vendors and OEMs are there, issues can still make you question about the skill you have acquired and your level of knowledge. As promised, Windows 7 has been liked by people and it is supposed to be problem free in many respects and it really is but once I met a person who is technologically savvy himself and not really considering the implications of upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 he went ahead and instead of a fresh install after taking a backup he actually upgraded the system to the latest operating system and everything was running fine till he installed a new software from "Avid" and a weird problem cropped up. There was no CD Rom drive in the "computers" window which is "My Computer" in XP. The problem challenged his abilities and he had to pull in the on-line technical support guys who carried on with a lengthy hour of troubleshooting before it was resolved.
Whenever the Avid software was tried to run it gave an error message as "media manager not configured" and if you go to the Device Manager then there is the CD Rom drive with a yellow exclamation mark on it. As usual, a driver update in the device manager was tried but resulted in a failure with error code 52. Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver did not help. It was clearly a problem with the "digital signature" of the CD Rom related drivers which could not be tackled. If you search the Google there are a plenty of BCD related commands which should force Windows 7 into accepting the drivers even though the driver is not digitally signed but is important for the OS to run properly. Unfortunately, those commands completed successfully from the command prompt but the issue remained to be resolved.
One ray of hope we saw when the computer was booted by pressing F8 repeatedly into the Advanced Boot Configuration menu and Driver signing was turned off from there. It resolved the issue temporarily but you need to perform this step repeatedly, every time you boot up the computer otherwise the problem shows up again. We went to the extent of running the "gpedit" command and configured how windows should respond to unsigned drivers but still the issue remained unresolved.
We were running out of resources and my friend was running low on his level of patience till we found a tool with us which did the job for us. It turned Windows 7 into "Test Mode" which means it should accept all drivers as Windows would when the OS is still in the lab. It actually shows the words "Test Mode" in the system tray. Not only that, we found three drivers involved in the proper functioning of the CD in which one had a proper icon beside it proving that it was digitally signed and the other two had a black square beside it implying that those two were the problematic drivers.
We had to use that tool to specifically sign those drivers after finding the proper path to the "system32" folder till we got the message saying that "the drivers were signed". The computer was restarted and to our utter relief, the problem perished permanently. Maybe Microsoft has better ideas for the operating system if the user does not have to look for the right on-line technician to resolve it. The best thing is that we got it resolved.

Any suggestions on how to use an old cd-rom drive as a CD player without using a whole computer setup?
Was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to use a cd-rom drive, as well as maybe a computer power supply and external speakers, as a cd player. Also, if possible, is there any way to implement volume into the system, and also allow for the speakers to be supplied with a bit of power so that the volume may be turned up.

not really unless you can simulate all the signals needed for the drive plus its audio connectors. the easier way of doing that is base it on a mini itx motherboard and add a screen on to it.
Looking for songs in all the wrong places
QI have somehow developed numerous duplicate and triplicate music files on my hard drive and in my iTunes library. I realized that I had to get rid of them from both places, and experimented with first eliminating duplicate songs from the hard drive.
