Here are some more information for Series Amplifier:
I personally have always been biased to guitar effects processors over playing dry through an amp. I was heavily influenced to pick up the guitar by the chunky saturated over driven tones of Metallica's Master of Puppets and Justice for All albums. Seriously, when I heard those albums I fell in love and found my calling. But I couldn't get that type of sound from any amplifier alone. Much of this could be that I didn't have a half or full stack; just your average guitar amps. Still, I had played through several Marshalls, Peaveys, Ampegs...the list goes on. Even with stand alone effects pedals such as the many distortion pedals that were available; I just couldn't get that tone until I started messing around with guitar effects processors.
Later I discovered manufacturers were coming out with guitar amps with built in guitar effects. I thought this was a great concept since I was running my effects unit through an amp anyway. However, there was still something missing with those combo amps. Then one day I tried out a Flextone amp by Line 6 at The Guitar Center here in Tampa, FL. Let's just say I was completely blown away by the tones I was getting out of this thing. I took a closer look at the specs and it was a Flextone II with one 12" speaker (1x12). I eventually purchased the amp which then I became even more familiar with not only its potential to produce awesome rock and metal distortions, but also its versatility.
The Flextone II has the standard effects such as delay, chorus, reverb, flanger and so forth. My biggest rave is the amp models and distortion abilities it has. You can get a variety of tones from blues, country or jazz to rock and metal. My favorite model is the Insane setting with the gain cranked to about eight. Now I'm not super technical but after digging deeper I found that the Flextone series consists of digital modeling. From what I understand this is supposed to give you more of a true sound so that it doesn't sound processed as many of the older amp/effects combos sound. Either way I have always been very impressed.
I also ended up purchasing the large foot pedal board. For me this is a must and really it should be if you play live. I've never played through the first generation Flextone amp but I have a good friend who bought the Flextone III. I don't know what the difference was, but we put our amps side by side and I played through both with the same guitar and same amp settings (the III has a few more features) and I prefer the Flextone II over the Flextone III. I'm not sure if the speakers were different, but it sounded like two completely different amps. The III wasn't bad, but in my opinion my II had much better sound quality for the style of music I prefer to play.
The only drawback I see is that I wish the Flextone II had a pitch shift effect. I don't typically use a ton of effects; mainly just delay for my leads and a little chorus on my rhythms and clean sounds. But now and then I'd like to throw in some pitch shift or some kind of harmonizer in my guitar solos. I also wish the pedal board was a little less expensive. The Flextone is priced reasonable (you certainly get what you pay for) but if you buy the pedal board with it then you end up paying a hefty amount of money in one shot. Of course 'a lot of money' is relative. As far as tone, usability, versatility, power, reliability and pretty much everything else, I give it two-thumbs up.
