First off, no one who has answered this question so far has any idea what they are talking about. The way you describe it, you have a mono line-level RCA connection on your receiver and speaker level 5-way binding posts on your subwoofer.
If that is how it is then you are working with a passive subwoofer that needs an amplifier to work. The cheapest and easiest thing to do would be to get a plate amp off Parts Express or other company for $100-$200 which will give you all the power and flexibility you need. If you want to go for more power and more expense, a pro audio amplifier would fit the bill. If you are unsure about how to hook up everything, the manual that came with your receiver should have some diagrams that should help. If not, go online and search some A/V forums.
If worst comes to worse, a technician should be able to hook everything up for ~$20. It really is not that hard to do once you understand all the connection.
