The Kicker CVR 12 is a subwoofer. We should start by explaining exactly what a subwoofer does. A subwoofer is a loudspeaker that is designed to reproduce very low bass frequencies. They are generally between 8 to 21 inches in diameter and they are also referred to as a sub. A subwoofer is not usually used on its own as it generally used with home theatre systems and, as with the Kicker CVR12 subwoofer, with in car sound systems.
The quality of the subwoofer will depend mainly on the quality of the components used and the how well they are put together. They can be made out of various materials such as polypropylene, kevlar, carbon, aluminium and even reinforced paper. You get a slightly different sound with each material.
People will often put subwoofers in enclosures to make them easier to mount (particularly in cars) and to also give them a deep booming sound. There are a lot of different enclosures available and, as with subwoofers, each one of them will give you a slightly different kind of sound.
You can get sealed enclosures, ported enclosures and bandpass enclosures. Sealed are the smallest of the enclosures and these produce a very accurate bass. Ported, or vented, are the middle sized enclosures and these give out a more boomy sound. Bandpass enclosures are the largest which produce the largest boom sound but with the least amount of accuracy.
If you buy a sub on it's own it is called unmounted and if you buy a sub which is already in an enclosure then this is called mounted. So, When you are looking to buy a sub for your car you need to decide whether to buy mounted or unmounted.

I have a friend that has two 15inch Kicker L7 in his Chevy HHR… One of the loudest systems I’ve ever heard...
These subs peak at 2000 watts, and 1000 watts RMS! They also have dozens of other crazy innovative designs like heat reduting t-cut top plate, solid pole peice, cast-aluminum basket, spring loaded terminals, poly-cotton semi-progressive spider, full coverage back bracing, santoprene rubber surround, etc etc etc…
They usually run $550 - $600 a piece, but I found them on amazon on sale for $300. If you’re serious about having BIG BASS then I suggest you check out the 15" Kicker L7.
I would also suggest the 12" Kicker L7 Vented Box. This is another great product from the Kicker L7 line. At 12 inches it’s a slighty smaller sub, but comes in a very nice vented enclosure. The 12? has 1500 peak watts, and has 750 RMS watts.
