bi amping? please help me?
I am thinking of buying a set of MAGNEPLANAR® MMG's. I see that there is no voltage terminals on them for bi-amping. I have seen a pic or diagram showing that you can run the current and voltage source to one set of speaker terminals. Can this really be done without damaging the speakers? My powered sub that i have kinda doesn't sound to good by itself when I disconnect the voltage wires from the speakers I have now. Any info would be great.

Magneplanar loudspeakers are very good loudspeakers…IF you take the time to optimize your listening environment and properly position the Magneplanar dipole loudspeakers.
From Sunfire’s Theater Grand Amplifier 7-Series User’s Manual:
We could go on and on, but here’s the best part: we’ve included two kinds of outputs on the front left and front right channels:
(1) a standard voltage-source (i.e., near zero impedance) output for all typical applications and:
(2) a higher-impedance current-source output, which many prefer for electrostatic, planar magnetic, or ribbon speakers, such as our Cinema Ribbon line. Or you can biwire your system with the voltage source driving the woofer(s) and the current source driving the upper part of the system. In many cases this provides by far the best possible interface between the amplifier and the speaker system.
As you know Magneplanar MMG loudspeakers are not equipped in stock form for biamplification or biwiring. If you wish to experiment with the current-source (i.e. “vacuum tube emulation,” transconductance mode, etc.,) and (the more conventional) voltage-source output modes on Sunfire’s Theater Grand Amplifiers it certainly would be worth experimenting in my opinion. That said, as a caveat one should never use current-source / current-drive amplification with traditional box-type loudspeakers without careful and thorough consideration of the factors involved. Though much of the journal paper is fairly technical, I highly recommend reading the Mills and Hawksford AES paper listed within the Google Docs resource below if you’re interested in more detailed information on current-drive or current-source technology.
In order to biwire the MMG’s you will need to modify or replace the stock crossover network. Doing so wouldn’t be too difficult a task or project for a skilled audio enthusiast/hobbyist nor would it harm the loudspeaker if done correctly. As the other answerer suggested you can try the Maggie Users Group for help or assistance with such a project. Or better yet contact a vendor such as Solen Electronique or Madisound to help with the design and construction of an improved biwireable replacement crossover network for your MMG’s (should you purchase them.) (The Google Docs page to which I’ve provided a link below has within another Google Docs page containing links to Solen, Madisound and other similar vendors.)
On this subject it is important to distinguish between biamplification and biwiring – they are very different beasts. Biwiring is simply running two pairs of speaker cables for each amplifier channel with one pair feeding the high frequency driver and the other pair separately feeding the low frequency driver. Most audio skeptics feel that traditional biwiring provides no audible benefit other than lowering the resistance of your speaker cable. However there may indeed be one very tangible, very worthwhile exception, i.e. the current-source, voltage-source output options featured on applicable Sunfire products. Biamplification, on the other hand, is simply using an active electronic crossover unit (generally in the form of a powered outboard, external device,) to divide the audio spectrum reproduced by a loudspeaker into separate high-pass, low-pass and (where applicable) band-pass sections. These sections are comprised of band-limited line-level signals that are fed to individual audio power amplifiers (or amplifier channels) in order to power the individual drivers (or driver sections,) which have been selected by the loudspeaker designer to provide optimal performance over their limited operating bandwidth. Among other things, the greatest benefit to biamplification, triamplification, etc., is improved dynamic headroom along with a small reduction in some of the non-linearities inherent in most loudspeaker / power amplifier combinations.

As I have alluded earlier, Magnepan’s inexpensive MMG planar-magnetic loudspeakers are a good value. There are three key points that must be taken into consideration when using Magneplanar MMG’s. You will need to: (1) use an audio amplifier (or amplifiers) capable of substantial output - preferably a continuous output of no less than 200W into a 4Ω nominal impedance from 20 Hz to 20 kHz; (2) supplement the MMG’s with one or more high performance (internally or externally powered) subwoofers; and (3) take the time to properly optimize your listening environment and loudspeaker set-up. The latter is absolutely essential when using dipole loudspeakers. The choice between current-source and voltage-source output modes on Sunfire’s power amplifiers serves as an added bonus.
Regardless of how you intend to connect Magneplanar MMG’s to your existing system, for configuration flexibility and the potential to improve the sound quality, I recommend that you replace the existing passive crossover network in the MMG’s with an improved biwireable design constructed with higher performance capacitors, resistors and air-core inductors. (Solen, Madisound or other similar vendors can be of assistance in designing and constructing replacement crossovers. Just be sure that the crossover design is such that it is set-up to use heavy-duty jumpers between the terminals for each of the individual driver sections in order to accommodate conventional, non-biwire connections. For loudspeaker terminals you may want to consider using heavy-duty, high quality 5-way binding posts, such as those from Cardas Audio, WBT-USA, Furutech and others, to ensure maximum reliability and versatility.)
With respect to the Magneplanar MMG’s and the current-source and voltage-source outputs on Sunfire amplifiers: you should limit the use of the current-source outputs to powering the MMG panels only. Conduct your own listening tests to compare the current-source connection with the voltage-source connection to determine which amplifier output modes sound better to you - both before and after replacing the stock crossovers (none of which initially requires the use of biwiring.) Once fitted with new biwireable crossover networks you can then experiment further by biwiring the current-source and voltage-source outputs to the ribbon tweeter and the lower-frequency planar-magnetic unit, respectively. Please note: these are the only two MMG/Sunfire amplifier configurations in which one should use the current-source amplifier outputs. Otherwise stick with the voltage-source outputs for all other high-level power amplifier output connections.
Using the audio equipment you’ve mentioned above you should not (need to) use the high-level speaker inputs and outputs on the Infinity subwoofer. The band-limited Low-Frequency Effects (LFE) channel or the subwoofer output(s) on the Sunfire TGP pre/pro combined with the Line-Level/LFE Input on the Infinity subwoofer should suffice. The only thing remaining is to run two pairs of loudspeaker cables, i.e., biwire cable runs, between the desired output terminals on your Sunfire amplifier to the custom biwireable crossovers on the Magneplanar MMG’s. For biwire operation you would simply remove the jumper that bridges the terminals for the individual high-frequency and low-frequency sections on your new crossovers and connect the other ends to the appropriate amplifier outputs. Conversely, when using a non-biwire configuration simply leave the jumper installed between each of the upper- and lower-frequency crossover terminals and connect the other end of the speaker cables to EITHER the current-source OR the voltage-source outputs on the respective amplifier channels. Do NOT simultaneously use both the current-source AND the voltage-source amplifier outputs for a given audio channel unless the loudspeaker is properly configured for true biwire operation. Make absolutely certain that you do not inadvertently interconnect the current-source and voltage-source outputs to each other at any point between the amplifier and the loudspeaker.
