One of the greatest advancements in laptop computers is the touchscreen laptop. In 2009 Hewlett Packard introduced their very popular TouchSmart tm2 touch screen laptop computer. It was first portable computer to employ multi touch user functionality that allows users to touch the screen in more than one location at a time and make gestures to control the software. This is a very handy feature but it doesn't work for one very popular reason that people buy touchscreen laptop computers in the first place and that's handwriting recognition.
Handwriting recognition software has made tremendous advances over the years. Basically the way the software works is that the user writes on the computer screen with a stylus or electronic pen and the computer attempts to read the handwriting and transcribe it into text. Early versions of this type of software were plagued with problems and very inaccurate. Speech recognition software has become very accurate over the years and handwriting recognition has followed in its place.
This type of software is very handy for people who are the go a lot and can't easily set their laptop down somewhere to type something into it. For this type of application, it's much easier to simply write on the screen as if you were writing on a notepad.
There are some tricks to getting handwriting recognition software to work properly on your touchscreen laptop computer. The first is to go through the training process. The software is pretty good right out of the box at recognizing handwriting but accuracy will be improved if you go through some simple training. The way this works is that the software we'll ask you to write a series of phrases. Then it will compare your actual handwriting against what it expected you to write. It will make notes of your particular writing style and therefore be much more accurate when you use the software in the future. For example it might ask you to write the phrase, "the boy has a blue ball". It will then attempt to read your handwriting. If it interprets your handwriting to read the "boy has a blue bell", it will instantly know that that is not correct and it will remember that your a's sometimes looks like e's.
It's actually quite amazing how accurate this type of software application can be. The best handwriting recognition programs can actually recognize and transcribe cursive writing into text. Considering how hard it is to read many people's cursive writing this is an amazing feat.
