Designed by Giovanni Michelotti, the Triumph Spitfire was released in 1962, based heavily on the Triumph Herald. With the chassis, suspension and 1147cc engine all from the Herald, the Triumph Spitfire was lightweight and relatively low cost to produce. The low overheads were needed in the production of the Triumph Spitfire to ensure the sports car could compete on retail price with the much popular Austin Healey Sprite, an affordable sports car. The Triumph Spitfire would prove to be a successful model, not only during its long production run, but also today with the Triumph Spitfire a popular classic car for those looking to purchase a first time classic sports car.
With featured kept basic to ensure low cost production, the Triumph Spitfire came with a plastic steering wheel and rubber floor mats. A modern feature were the standard wind up windows which were not found on the Austin Healey rival. Over the next few years the Spitfire contained to benefit from changes such as the option for a hard top and wire spoke wheels. After a list of significant changes Triumph officially released the Mark II, sporting another notable change, the increase of 67bph to the engine thus increasing the sports car performance.
A complete change to the front of the car was seen on the Mark III Triumph Spitfire, with further improvements to the interior of the car. Released in 1967, the Mark III also has an increased capacity engine originating from the Triumph 1300, a 1296 cc which made the Mark III Spitfire a nifty car for its time. The 75bhp engine was now capable of going from a dead start position to 60 miles per house in a time of twelve and a half seconds, a respectable time for a sports car of the late sixties. Wood-veneer trim was introduced to the interior of the Triumph Spitfire Mark III, thus the Mark III was both more refined and had greater performance output compared to the earlier models.
1971 saw the refined Mark IIII released, with major changes to the back of the car, with a new Stag look. The engine was altered to be less aggressive, coupled with an improvement to the handling of the car. The interior of the car saw some well welcomed updates, with the instruments placed in front of the driver opposed to the centre of the dash. Upon further changes the Mark 5 Triumph Spitfire was released for sale in 1974. With a much greater performance output, the Mark 5 was able to reach speeds around 100mph, with improved levels of torque. The advances were not just limited to the performance of the Triumph Spitfire Mark 5, the interior saw the inclusion of more upmarket features such as fully reclining seats.
After running for a record breaking 18 years, the Triumph Spitfire ceased in 1980, and is now a very popular classic car due to its low costs, ease of sourcing parts, and the numerous owners clubs. The Triumph Spitfire is often recommended as a first time buy for anybody wishing to invest in a classic car.
