AC not working because of low voltage?

we live in kolkata,india and recently purchased a AC. we see that because of heavy voltage drop in our area (some times it goes even upto 160 V low as opposed to the expected 220 V in india), our AC doesnt work during the day. We even tried with stabilizers and boosters,but still no help.
So, I am thinking to purchase a imported one from USA. based on my understanding, the products manufactured in US requires only 110 V. So, I was thinking if i buy a AC from US and use it in india,it should work with no problem even if the voltage drops to 160 V because it will be still be above the range of what is required for the AC bought from USA, which is 110V
please suggest me on this.
If you purchase a unit manufactured for use in the U.S., you will have either a 220VAC or 110/120VAC 60Hz unit.
The 110/120VAC unit will not last very long at 160V, the 220VAC unit will perform identically to the one that you currently have PROVIDED YOU HAVE 60Hz CURRENT.
For all I know, India is on 50Hz, which will adversely affect motors designed for 60Hz.
A constant power source would be your answer but that is very expensive. It would be less costly to purchase a generator and its fuel than to have the transformers and control circuits necessary to maintain 220VAC over a 60V variation.
