When it comes to home security, let's face it: it's war. You and your family are pitted in a struggle against the thief or intruder, the one who wants to take whatever he can with the minimum amount of effort. Getting inside his head is the first step to gaining the advantage in battle. Here are several ways to make his job more difficult and send him packing before he has the chance to steal a light switch.
1) Advertise. Make it obvious that you've installed a home security system. Hang a sign or post a sticker. The neighbors might consider it tacky, but you're not worried about them. You need to focus on your own protection. If a thief has the choice between your house (with signs) and theirs (without), he'll most likely pay them a visit first. Just don't say "I told you so."
2) Lock it up. Do you consider the car in your garage to be untouchable? Think again. Thieves are crafty. They can find a way into your garage without tripping any alarms. Think twice about leaving house keys inside, or important documents that will expose your identity.
3) Reinforce your doors and windows. Even if you have a home security system, thieves will not mind taking a chance if they see your windows or doors will be easily bypassed. By the time the alarm sounds and someone responds, they'll be well on their way.
4) Watch for the stakeout. Ever noticed someone sitting in a car nearby your house? Had any bad feelings? With the highly professional technology available to all, thieves don't need to rent a van outside your house to watch the patterns of coming and going. They can do it from far away with a high-powered telescopic lens. The most dangerous thief is the informed thief: they will strike when you least expect, probably when you are not at home. If you notice any strange activity, notify your local law enforcement as well as your neighbors. Don't keep any valuables in the house, even in a professional grade safe.
5) Check the backup plan for your home alarm system. The greatest thieves have learned how to bypass professionally installed systems, especially hard wired systems that can be taken down by cutting the power to your home. Make sure there is a battery-powered backup system, or that when your wires are cut the security company will be notified anyway. Consider a wireless alarm system to avoid this area of vulnerability.
6) Do some research. Scholars do it. Thieves do it, too. Like any professionals, they like to stay on top of the latest in their field. Think like they do. It is the first step to making them obsolete.

I am not charged data for using the backup assistant. Doubt you will be too. For Mobile IM,you are billed for air time minutes when signing off/on IM and refreshing your buddy list. Each IM sent and received counts as one text.
