Many mobile phones, and certainly most of the high end models, now come with a GPS (satellite navigation) receiver built into them, allowing them to pin point your position with great accuracy. To complement this, there are a number of software applications that will put a detailed mapping service onto your handset and that will calculate routes to get you from one place to another.
Many of the familiar names in stand alone satellite navigation have offerings for mobile phones, including Garmin and Tom Tom, but as you might expect, unless your phone comes with these pre-installed, there is usually a cost involved in buying their solutions.
For some time, Nokia have been bundling their mapping solution, called Ovi Maps, with GPS enabled Nokia handsets, but this basic package has excluded the turn by turn voice navigation solution, that is so useful for safe navigation whilst driving. This situation however has changed and many Nokia handsets are now eligible to download the latest version of Nokia maps and take advantage of free voice navigation. Once the maps application is downloaded there are a selection of both male and female voices to choose from, available in a number of different languages and these can be downloaded as required. Maps are available to download for free for over 70 countries.
The internet search giant, Google, also offer a free mapping service available for many popular makes of mobile phone, and this includes plotting navigation routes for you, but no voice navigation options. Voice navigation is available for some handsets running Google's Android operating system, but this is still in a Beta, or test mode.
The difference with the Google solution over other manufacturers is that maps are downloaded as you need them, rather than residing on the phone's memory, so data charges may apply.
Which solution you choose will depend on the make of your mobile phone. If you have a compatible Nokia, download and try Ovi Maps but also compare it with Google Maps, particularly if you don't need the turn by turn navigation. For other handsets, Google Maps provides a good, free solution, that can help you find where you are, and get to where you need to be.

Satellite navigation systems for your car used to be expensive accessories. But due to the rapid development of technology and rising competition, prices have slumped over the past few years so that almost everyone can afford sat navs nowadays.
The technology of satellite navigation systems resembles the one once used in submarines when they were on or near the surface and is the main global positioning system (GPS) of international military services. While originally developed and designed for military purpose in 1960-70 sat navs are now available for civilians, too. The principle is based on satellite signals determining the position of a sat nav receiver which is part of every in car sat nav system. Military devices have an astonishing accuracy with a maximum error of only one metre. Even though civil sat navs can’t keep up to this, they can easily position where about on a road the receiver is. It is able to receive live traffic updates via an RDS signal and takes them into consideration when calculating routing. It further suggests alternative directions if necessary and provides different routes depending on the day and time.
Nevertheless, with these additional features TomTom introduced a new generation of sat navs and thanks to an improved sensitivity to satellite signals almost no accuracy errors occur. It is expected that other leading manufacturers like Navman and Garmin will soon offer similar products with an equivalent feature. With a price range of over £200 the TomTom Go 720 Traffic Edition is still reasonably priced considering the technology. However, it might be worth being patient and waiting for a second generation as usually technical innovation comes along with troubles and often needs to be improved and adjusted.
Generally speaking, a sat nav is useful for every driver and especially for those who think that the philosophy of getting from A to B is more a game of pure chance than logical routing. If you tend to write directions down rapidly on a piece of paper, napkin or anything else that’s just within your reach then you should go for a reasonably priced satellite navigation system. This will not only save you money but also valuable time and you’ll reach your destination more relaxed.

i have a nissan primera se without sat nav and am curious how i go about installing sat nav?
It wouldn't be plug and play since you would need to run the wiring for it (doubt the harness would be there for it) as well as running the wires for the GPS receiver.
You would be further ahead getting a Garmin or Tom Tom, or something similar - factory options installed after the fact are usually pretty expensive.
